I'm new to the 4WD set; in fact I've just taken delivery of my Lexus RX350. For my first excursion I'd like to take my kids up to Yarrangobilly Caves and surrounds.
Specifically, I'd like to know if it's possible (and reasonably comfortable) to travel from the caves through Brindabella to either Canberra or Tumut, how long it would take and what I should expect to encounter along the way.

Also, If anyone has camped out that way any recommendations would be appreciated.

Many thanks
Michael

Have a look here:

Is this the route you are taking???
There used to be a shortcut via blue waterholes from Yarrangobilly to Brindabella but I'm not sure if you can get through, Sneaking suspicion that NP&WS have closed it off.
However this map shows that it is simply a matter of following "long Plains Rd:

Camping available on the banks of the Yarrangobilly river as you cross the bridge about 10 km from Yarrangobilly.
Take your swimwear as the thermal pool is fantastic...

Thanks for the advice. I was planning to travel Long Plains Rd but a friend of mine said that he thought it might have been closed.

Used to do the Long Plain Rd from Brindabella to Rules Point on motorcycles many moons ago - tried to do it in the Prado a few years back and found it was gated from the Brindabella end - something about powerline maintenance and landowners only? Shame - its an awesome bit of road, ideal for softroaders, bikes etc, some knarly hills, creek crossings, also some really nice swift and smoooooth dirt track...

Cheers and beers

G'day,

ring the Tumut Parks office for up to date info on the tracks, they are very helpful.
