Discover-Oz

I have recently started to use Discover-Oz with my Garmin GPS 18.

So far the package is fantastic with quick position lock. However, I have found that when it comes to plotting the track on the map, the unit is increadibly slow. EG: If I drive 5km up the road, the unit will plot the trip perfectly however, it will just take 15 mins to do so. When I stop the track, the unit instantly recognises where it is and jumps to that location.

I am having no problem at all will reception.

Can anybody suggest a possible fix for this problem. I have called a few "experts" and so far have come up short.

Thanks in advance.

Hello - you will need to provide a bit more information as it is a bit unclear what you are doing and how. There is AFAIK no gps mapping product called Discover-Oz. Do you mean OziExplorer? Or are you using Tracks4Australia/Mapsource??

If you are using a GPS mapping program what are you running it on (laptop/pda)and what are the secifications. When you say the unit is slow - do you mean the GPS or the GPS mapping program??

Cheers

DiscoverOz???

That is a product that is unique to the Magellan range of GPS hardware as far as I am aware.

I think we have a Name problem.

Hello - the Magellan product is actually called DiscoverAus...you may be able to get it to work with any GPS in NMEA (moving map) mode so cant be totally discounted as a possibility but doubt if this is what he is using....the mystery remains?? My money is on OziExplorer:) We will have to wait and see.

Hmm,
The plot thickens.

Did a search on Garmin GPS 18 and it's just a GPS mouse, so it must be plugged into a laptop or something.

What's more the site where the Garmin GPS mouse is referenced (The Map Shop) specifically mentions the Garmin is NOT compatible with OziExplorer.

I am intrigued!!!

I get much the same when using DiscoverAus on my laptop with an old Garmin GPS. I don't think the Magellan software and Garmin products are compatible, works fine with my Magellan gps

this happens on my garmin GPS72, to fix it go to your tracks page, press menu and select setup track log , then under record method select auto, also select normal under interval.

hope this fixes your problem

Sorry for the delayed reply. Have been at Sea, (Navy).

I'll answer some of your questions.

Firstly, I am sure that the software I am using is Discover-Oz. I also have Ozi-Explorer running on the same machine.

My laptop is around 18 months old and at the time it was new, it was fairly hi-end.

I have spoken with "Next Destination" in WA who supply the Melbourne Map Centre with all of their software and was fairly quickly told that I was committing a mortal sin by using a Garmin GPS with Magellan software. As a result, I came away with very little advice.

Im not sure who has said that the GPS 18 unit cant be used with Ozi-Explorer. If this is the case, someone had best inform my PC because it is working perfectly. I do however, have to use a program called "Spanner" (downloadable from www.garmin.com) to ensure that the GPS pumps out NMEA.

A close friend of mine has said that I can also use a GPS gate to multiply the out-put of my GPS on various COM ports and run both Ozi Exp and Dis-Aus at the same time. To this point, I have not managed to achieve this as I don't realy want to go and play with the settings that have Ozi working so well.

Thank you to all that replied. It is fantastic to see that there are so many interested in helping someone that has near on no clue with GPS stuff.
