I am considering a suspension lift for my 2001, 78 series troopy. Can someone who has been through this give me some practical advice. How big an improvement does the lift make, what are the negatives (if any). should I go 2 inch or 4 inch? I am currently running Cooper s/t 285/75/16. Please forward your suggestions. Thanks, Kevin.

Hi Kev,
If you are in Sydney you can go to better springs in St Marys. They make Kings springs and will be able to make you a set at whatever height and will enable the greatest amount of flex for the weight carrying that you need.
I've had many custom sets from them and I have replaced 3 sets of OME and 1 set of Lovells with theirs.
3 inch will be great but 2 inch will be more than adequate.

Most people I know have gone with ARB OME, and lately the Dakar Leaf Springs. Supposed to be a 50mm lift - that all depends on what weight is in the vehicle. I wouldn't go higher, and 285's on the 100series rigid front rims have enough clearance.

Mine are the heaviest front coils, recommended if you have a winch, and because I have a bit of weight on the back, I used the "600kg" rear leaf springs. Done 40,000k so far including lots of hard stuff with no issues.

I would suggest that you keep the original Toyota bushes, rather than fit poly with greasable shackles. The original spring bushes have a solid metal sleeve, so they move nicely, and I've had one friend bust a greasable pin in the desert.

Hi trooper,

I had a 78 series troopy till last year. Had an EFS aftermarket suspension 50mm lift, managed to break it 4 times last year in severe country, one of those was air bags

Last year changed to a 79 series with canopy and had Fred's 4WD conversions (Towoomba) put in coils over original springs and beef up the coils on the front. Best result I have experienced whilst retaining all the original Toyota gear. I have raised the GVM and I'm very satisfied with the ride.

We will test it over the Madigan next week and it was there that I broke a main leaf last year.

Just my experience.

Hi
Have a 2004 troopy with arb ome suspension, as above i went as heavy as i could in the front coils then got 600kg springs in the rear(i just carry to much gear thats why).
I have the greaseable shackles and have no probs yet, but who knows what the future holds.
I like the ride but my partner prefered the original ride when new, she thinks it rolls around to much now. She does have a point, but it would be no good for serious loading for a bush trip as standard.
The new, cheaper option for the old man emu's are made in india i think. I went the aussie made.
Good luck.
