Hi folks,
I was reading with interest on thread 43490 in regard to linking HP iPAQ 5700 series to oziexplorer.
Probably a dumb question to the literate, but is there a need for a laptop to run together with my HP iPAQ, or can I just buy oziexplorer and load it into my GPS from my PC.

Thanks for any assistance

No need for the laptop but some like the laptop for the bigure picture.

I have my laptop with me for photo's etc so it is stored away if I ever need it or as a backup. Sometimes I will plot a course at night on the laptop then download to the Ipaq.

All personal choice really.

Thanks for that, I was starting to dream $ signs. I have only had the set for a week.
I originally purchased a Tom Tom One and thanks to this forum, realised I could not use it for what I wanted. I was lucky enough to return and swap it for the iPAQ.

All the best.

How do you find the iPAQ for visibility?
I was out recently with an elcheapo Garmin but display was much better than mates iPAQ. Particularly in seeing the arrow bizzo telling you which direction to take. And the guy with the iPAQ had to use a pointer thingy to input while I can use my big thumbs.
Note the technical terms. Tells you the level of my skills....

John,

Have just gone through a similar exercise myself, only using a Dell Axim X51V.

There is a version of OziExplorer (CE) that runs on a PDA using Windows Mobile.
The only need for a PC (or Laptop) is to run ActiveSync to enable easy transfer of OziExplorer to the PDA (iPAQ)
As Ozi also needs a separate Map reference source, NATMAP Premium is recommended for the main maps. There is a conversion utility downloadable from the OziExplorer Web site which converts the 8 250K Raster maps into a format used by OziCE. You also load other maps as you go, for specific areas if you wish.
I used a 4 Mb CF Card to store the maps rather than use the PDA's internal storage which is somewhat limited.

Sand Man,

Thanks for the info. I have no doubt I'll be back on the forum again when it comes time to doing all this, but it appears there is plenty of experience on the subject.

Regards John P.

Ooops!

That should read:- a 4Gb CF Card. (4Mb will not hold much)

No problem yet. But I have only had the set for a short time. I suppose it would depend on where it was mounted in the vehicle with reflection ect. With the Tom Tom, you could adjust the screen brightness. I haven't got into the manual of this one enough to see if the same.

John P

I have the HP iPAQ rx5765.

I use TomTom for the blacktop.

I use oziexplorerCE on the PDA for off road.

I have a laptop with oziexplorer and that gives me a third option of using moving map on the laptop with the PDA being used as a GPS receiver.

The screen on the PDA is antiglare. I have however found that the anti-glare screen is not as good as the Garmin in-car units I previously tested.

You can purchase anti-glare film to put on screens on ebay. I have not tried it but believe it works.

Thanks for the info Tjilpi. I'll see what sort of strife I can get into now setting mine up.
