Can anyone tell me if there is a pre-payed satellite phone service available with no monthly/quarterly service charge please?

Bit of background. I’ve been in the fortunate position over the last couple of years to have access to a Motorola 9505 which has cost me nothing apart from the occasional calls.

Obviously this can’t go on for ever and I’m now going to purchase a 9505. What gets my back up is paying service charges when the phone is not in use.

Two out of three trips I do are solo and usually into remote areas. My daughter is now becoming concerned about communications when I’m away.

I put an application in for a subsidy some time ago, but was told by a dear little thing in Canberra it was unsuccessful (long story).

After a lot of Googling and research, I’m more confused than when I first started.

I'm not interested in rental and can't afford one of the new HF sets.

Help guys!

Regards

Kim

Kim,

The 9505 takes a normal GSM Mobile card set for International roaming.

The call costs are more expensive than that available on a plan, but for what you want it for, the GSM card option is your solution.

TR Telecom in Melbourne - $30/mth or $15/mth if suspended. Their plan is for a minimum of 4 months (unlike Telstra'$ 24months) however the sat phone number is an overseas number for people in AU to call (but who cares if it's for emergency) $2/min call + 40c flagfall

You can pick up a second hand 9505 or 9505A for $1000-$1300 or buy new for $1995 (make sure you haggle with them down from $2300 - $2700)
