We've been to the Warrumbungles before and always travelled from Sydney through Lithgow, Orange, Dubbo etc. does anyone know a quicker way (we have a 4wd and 2 young kids - 4 & 2yrs)?

I'd say (with tongue in cheek) as much time as needed.

But seriously add a bit longer when travelling with the kids as they always want to burn off energy when you stop. I know mine do (3yr old and 5 month old) the eldest is just getting to the stage of asking "are we there yet".

The NRMA travel planner reckons (from the CBD) to travel up the Newcastle freeway to Peats Ridge interchange - cross country to Maitland - up the Golden Hwy and cross country to Coonabarabran. Distance 480 km - time 6:36.

We have been going that way for a few years now (even when we go to Nyngan because it avoids Dubbo). It's a nice drive. The Golden Highway is a good road and fairly quiet.

When I was working in western Sydney, as per Doug T.
Used to work 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off from Brisbane over a few years and drive down to take my gear, and use the Newell Highway.

Disco1942 might have the answer if you are more eastern Sydney.

Paul & Suz,
I live in the lower Hunter and go up the Golden Highway often.

Take the F3 north from Wahroonga, along the F3 take the Cessnock turnoff which about 1 hour and 25m from Wahroonga, then follow the signs through to Cessnock and Branxton there are a few road turnoffs so be aware of the signs, at Branxton turn left onto the New England Highway to the Golden Highway turn off left about 10km before Singleton, the signs at this intersection are large and show the Golden Highway clearly. After Jerrys Plains the signs are all good for Coonabarabran. Look for Merriwa, Coolah and Binnway.

There are even better roads after Cessnock, left after the airport through Pokolbin, head for Broke, north out of Broke about 2km left after the bridge, at Putty Road do a dog leg right then immediately left along Wallaby Scrub Road, then left at Warkwoth and you are on the Golden Highway heading West. Next real town is Jerrys Plains.

All of these roads are best in daylight as the scenery is great and there is seldom many cars.

Paul & Suz,

The most straight forward way without the local roads is:

North along F3 to the very end, that is straight ahead at the first roundabout (2 hours north of Wahroonga), left at New England Highway, left at Golden Highway as per above.

Hi Paul & Suz

If you go up the golden hwy try to spend a night at Coolah Tops a truly amazing place and the kids will love it, lots of animals in the camp area. Check out the NPWS web site.

Have fun
