We had a bit of a discussion here a couple of weeks ago about MS Vista (the new Windows operating system) - there seems to be a few good reasons here not to use it:

Yep, I think the time is coming close to bite the bullet and bid farewell to Mr Gates and all his products. I suspect that he won't starve on the fortune he has already amassed.

Although I have a number of (justified and considered) criticisms of some Microsoft products I'm actually quite fond of Bill and his sensible use of his cash :)

However I agree... Linux in one of it's variants is looking more and more attractive
especially with the wealth of free software available for it.

Another vote for Ubuntu - you can even burn it to a CD and just boot from your CD drive to "road test" it without screwing up your Windows machine.

Very slick, but not quite ready for the average home user just yet who don't want to know about shell commands. Fantastic for anyone comfortable tinkering though!

Mike

I was reading one of the PC magazines the other day and their tests showed that unless you have the very latest in hardware, Vista will process ALL normal activities considerably slower than XP. So unless you want to spend some big $'s on top of your software purchase, you're just slowing down your computer.

XP looks good to me for some time yet.

Good idea, stick with XP and leave Vista alone until at least after the first major uprgade or Service Pack release. By then a lot more hardware and software should be up to speed and be able to run smoothly on Vista.

Very interesting. My old windows `98 computer died a couple of weeks ago.

Dick Smith Electronics sold me a H.P. Compac Presario SR5020 for $999.00 plus $100 or so for an extra 2 years warranty. The 1 year interest free clinched the deal for me. Has Vista home basic. I was`nt up to speed on windows `98 , so still getting to grips on the basics of Vista.
However nothing was mentioned to me at the point of sale about the `monitoring` of my downloads of `copyright ` material. From memory ,on setup I think I did accept `terms and contitions ` without reading them. It`s a bit late to find out about the restrictions after you have unpacked the computer and set it up.
D.S.E. should have warned me about this, assuming that they are up with the field about this, as they should be ,as they to my mind proport to be an industry leader in computer matters.
However, considering that I do not download much `copyright `material, if at all, I hope that I will not be duly affected. It`s the principle of my computer being `invaded` and material removed at Microsoft`s whim , this sticks in my throat a bit. Time will tell. Regards G.T.

I would ,with the utmost respect, beg to differ. How could a bunch of pimply faced juvenile twerps possibly be considered industry leaders. I would put them in the same league as the nappy wearing morons from Hardly Normal.

If you have a need for a system to fulfill a particular requirement, be it for business or pleasure ... find an expert an stick with him/her/them.

Have to totally agree with you Rosco, being in the business I get to see both sides of the coin though, unfortunately it seems to be the (shall we say elder states-persons) of our area that come into the shop and want Vista come hell or high water.

We go through all the explanations, re: you need nearly a new PC to run the program and it doesn't even support Quickbooks or MYOB to name just a few and then it turns out to be our fault for stocking the item.

My pet hate is to see Laptop manufacturers selling their products especially through DSE and HN with Vista loaded and only 512 ram Vista definately needs at least 1 gig to run properly and even XP with all its updates should have a gig to perform anywhere near its potental.

Had my say, maybe I am one of the "If you have a need for a system to fulfill a particular requirement, be it for business or pleasure ... find an expert and stick with him/her/them" that rosco mentions, geeze I'll get a swelled head. LOL.

Also, try to understand: people who are paid $10 per hour are NOT electronics engineers who are able to provide cogent advice to every thick member of the public.

Mike Harding – who had two sons working in retail whilst they were doing a degree course – they have (had) my sympathy!

Sorry Mike I have to disagree with you. "Also, try to understand: people who are paid $10 per hour are NOT electronics engineers who are able to provide cogent advice to every thick member of the public."

I have staff and have one over-riding rule, if you don't understand what the customer wants don't just try to bull-sh#t through it. Get a more experienced staff member to assist you. My pet hate used to be listeneing to sales people and I include the 18year old $16 per hour staff talk total hog wash to customers at these retail chains because they hadn't been taught or listened when it came to product knowledge. To give you a hyperthetical, if you went to purchase a new fridge for your vehicle and you wanted it to freeze as well. Would you still feel a little sorry for the young salesperson who told you it would freeze molten lead in 30seconds, I believe you may be a Tad upset a few weeks later when you found it didn't, with every right to be so.

When Dick smith first started he was partners with the owner of Jacar.
Not sure who owns either of them know. I have meet the original owner of Jacar a few times. Nice bloke, not sure what he knows about electronic's, but he is a good business man

I wouldn't waste my time walking through the door of our local DSE.

Uh-huh......?

The bad new folks is that it's your fault that your local DSE or Jaycar staff don't have a clue. Yep that's right.

Everyone wants products at rock bottom prices so the retail chains reduce their training to zero and hence expect 16 year olds to learn "on the job". Would you go into Coles and expect the guy putting out the vegies to be able to give you an explanation on the best cooking method of pumpkin with Estonian wines? Then why do you expect DSE members to know anything more than price, part number and where a product is?

I spent many years as a teenager and during my uni. days working for DSE and then completed a degree in electronics engineering and I now work in the field professionally. For a good proportion of the time I was at DSE I knew what I was talking about because I had external training, but the reality is most of the staff don't know and why should they?

1. The general public is stupid. I can clearly state this from many years of serving idiots who believe that they are going to get "professional" knowledge from a high street shop staffed by teenagers where they pay the minimum price. If you believe this you are a member of the great ignorant unwashed.

2. If you want professional advice then pay the money to get it from someone who knows what they are talking about, but you may pay more than DSE.

3. Jaycar is just the same they merely have a narrower range of products and they select staff who they believe have an external interest - no not professionals, normally idiots who think that car audio constitutes professional knowledge.
