Hi All.

I've tried searching through old posts. But didn't come up with an answer.

I have a Sony Vaio lap top and a Garmin hand held GPS.
I would like to know what people recommend from experience as a good software for 4wd navigation. Mainly for the northern half of Australia.

I really don't know a lot about this type of set up as I'm use to Marine navigation.
While reading other post, they keep mentioning moving map.

Any ideas of a good set up would be much appreciated.

Rob

Rob,
If you want moving map but not necessarily turn by turn voice instructions then I wouldn't go past OziExplorer. I use it with my Garmin Etrex without any dramas. You can scan in your own maps or use bought maps either way its good value. It is also not too complicated to learn.

Robert,

A few things you need.

A cable to join the GPS to the compute. Check with GPS OZ (Ithink they sponsor this site)

Oziexplorer software (available from this site)
Maps for the areas you require (also avail in the shop on this site)

When you load and connect5 this all up you can select moving map which will leave a plot of where you have been and shows you in real time where you are.

I second OziExplorer. You can download a trial version from their website and have a play with it.

We use Ozi and the Natmap Raster series of maps for our main nav tool, and have assorted larger scale maps for specific areas. ExplorOz had a package of the software here at a good price a short time ago.

Cheers

Another vote for OziExplorer and Natmap Raster Premium maps.
You install the maps on the PC, which can be referenced by Ozi and can also be accessed separately.

The Natmap Premium maps come on 2 DVD disks and will covers all of Australia which a fair detail of coverage. If you require more specific detailed areas you can buy additional maps but Natmap is fairly comprehensive.

OziExplorer includes a moving map feature which will show you exactly where you are (via GPS input) buy a directional arrow on the map display.

You can download OziExplorer from the Web site and trial it before you buy, but the cost is not that great.

As per Oziexplorer (PC version) and OziCE (PDA version), Ozi3D also has a try before you buy version. Try it and see what you think and whether it suits your purposes.
