Gday,

Just a quick one to those of you in the know ! - Whats the best thing to do regarding several rust spots that have started appearing on the roof of my 80 series. They arent large or deep with the largest being about the same size as my finger tip. ??

Cheers

Rub them back till you get shiny metal all around the edge, if badly pitted use rust converter and then apply a good metal primer, I've found the water based Ferropro to be the best, then rub back again to get it smooth before applying primer then top coat.
Depends on what sort of finish you are after, if just trying to stop rust as above, if after a perfect finish then take it to a panelbeater.

Good advice traveller2,

Birdy,
Get it done quick too. It'll only get worse.

I had a problem where the clearcoat paint had "broken down" and the blue paint underneath was going white. No amount of "cut&polish" or anything else was going to fix the problem, short of a respray. This was happening on the roof, the top of the gutters and the bonnet of the Jack. Repairer told me the Japanese paint quality was the culprit.

Now, a couple of grand poorer, the Jack has a new paint job on the roof and bonnet and is looking very smick again. The repairer used German paint which he says will outlast the Jack.

If you are keeping the vehicle for a while, at least get a couple of quotes from a Crash Repairer/Spray Painter. You may find the remedy cost not too bad at all.
