Hi there Doug,
You missed a couple other top sites.
GPSOZ sells both.
Prestige Communications (in your backyard) sell all brands.
The handheld units, with the right cradle will handle anything dished up to them.
For instance, the Magellan Meridian and Explorist handhelds can sit in an accessory cradle which has a suction base and a flexible arm or swivel mechanism, so they can sit upright, or lay flat, or any other angle you wish.
Magellan Cradles
Plenty of options out there mate.
I would have thought a similar option would exist for the Garmin eTrex units, although I'm not familiar with the products, or their accessories.
Everything is a compromise in one way or another, but the advantage of the handheld unit is that they can be used while on foot.
I'm still attempting to discover what is the best all round choice and have come to the conclusion that there isn't one.
I have the Magellan Meridian Marine handheld which has DiscoverOz and Great Desert Tracks "on-board". Useful, but lacks some detail unless you fiddle with the zoom and still doesn't provide the best detail.
I have a Notebook which the Magellan interfaces to and I run DiscoverOz, Great Desert Tracks and OziExplorer (with NATMAP Premium) on, sometimes all concurrently. This gives the easiest to read screen due to it's size, but the Notebook is somewhat of an "intrusion" between my Bride and myself. Certainly has it's uses.
Just recently purchased a PDA and run both OziExplorer (with NATMAP Premium) and CoPilot Live, for turn by turn direction in the Metro areas. This gives great flexibility in both the Metro Areas and the Bush, but I'm yet to find out how practical it's size will be for display purposes.
Overall, the PDA will probably get the most use, but the Magellan, as a stand-alone GPS, will always sit in its cradle as a backup reference. (also great for speed display)
The Notebook will probably be used if I'm doing any serious "Treknote" work.
Anyway, as I said, plenty of options, one just needs to decide what's best for their own specific purpose, or use the bloody lot like I do:-)
Have a good one!

Geez your little finger/s have been hammering away at the keyboard, Yeh those stores you mentioned do deserve a mention but there is just too many ,
Had a look the Magellan Mounts, are all the models upright ,???
I thought about the PDAs but was told they are not dust proof , As for the perfect GPS , probably impossible because you can't please all, my choice would be a Garmin Nuvi 660 with the features and functions of the Garmin GPS MAP 276C added on, that would be a GPS

Doug and Sandman
Doug, given the recent posts related to gadgets, you are indeed a brave fella.
Sandman. Couple of questions (or anyone else for that matter):
1. I had a look at the latest Magellan Explorist XL. The web site talks about software such as DiscoverOZ, Great Desert Tracks etc. Is this inbuilt, or do I still need a Lap top?
2. Now the most important question. If for example I drive down the Canning and decide to head into the bush for a considerable distance, will these new GPS units allow me to estabish my position relative to the mapping software provided?
For the life of me I can't get a clear answer on this!
Regards
Kim

Any GPS will provide you with co-ordinates in Lat/Long, UTM etc which you can relate to either a paper map or mapping software. With mapping software it will usually take direct input from a GPS and show you exactly where you are by a screen pointer. I think the answer you seek is... yes :)

Hi Kim,
Like many of the Magellans, the eXplorist XL has a pre-installed base map and the ability to load extra detail such as DiscoverAus or Great Desert Tracks.
When you buy one of these programs, you first load it on a PC of any kind, then select whatever you like to "upload" to the GPS, or copy first to a memory card.
The exception to this is DiscoverAus Topo which only comes on a memory card you can insert into the GPS.
In answer to your second question, YES.
With DiscoverAus and/or Great Desert Tracks loaded on your GPS, you will have a "moving map" feature similar to OziExplorer. Your current position will by displayed on the GPS map at all times. Personally, I prefer Ozi as the map display is more in line with a "standard" road map style.
DiscoverAus and Great Desert Tracks have reasonable detail which becomes more apparent as you zoom in.

I think your've saved me a lot of money. The last thing I want is a laptop.
Many thanks
