Looking at upgrading the old Ute to either a Nissan Patrol or Toyota Land cruiser, around 2002-2006 models in turbo diesel form cab chassis. Any advice on what to look for on thes second hand 4wd's would be appreciated. Not concerned on brand loyalty best Ute that I find for will get the money.
Is the Toyota worth the extra money over the Nissan, Ute will be used off-road weekly in winter, tows a boat around and carries building materials and tools around during the week.
Thanks for any replies

Drive them both with factory turbo' and your dilemna is over. The Toyota simply does it whilst the Nissan overheats.

furph, the later model Patrol's have the 4.8's radiator. My ute is close to GVM and has been used in all conditions and never had the temp gauge out of normal range.

g'day
Just went threw the same thing myself and being a Patrol owner from way back was pretty disappointed in what's being offered at the moment.
Now have a Toyota in the driveway!

Go the government actions if you are going 2nd hand, most are 40k and still under warranty, I did this twice and was very happy, but you have to be prepaired to wait for a good one to come up.As for brand, the Toyota is dearer but there are twice as many of them around. As yourself why and you have your answer.
Go the TD Cruiser.

the nissan has a much stronger driveline but is let down by its motor. You can spend a few grand and get the td42 to go as well as tojo motor but it will always use more fuel.

The Cab Chassis Nissan IS only available in the 4.2m litre Turbo Deisel From 2002 to 2006. Are you saying the 4.2 is inferior to the cruiser's a Donk?

I've got a gu that prabaly goes as well as a std toyota turbo but it is thirsty. The toyota puts out good power and economy. The nissan won't do both in my experience.

"does it easy" with 3 tonne?......you must have one that goes especialy well lambo. Certainly wouldn't say the 4.2tdi I've towed 1.5 tonne with was doing it easy. Doesn't the Patrol cab chassis only have a 2.5 tonne max towing capacity anyway compared to the Toyota 3.5 tonne? Although in the 2nd hand market I believe the Nissan to be a better all round 4 wheel drive for touring I certainly wouldn't be overloading one too much after seeing 2 cracked through the chassis.

Wouldn't be loading the tojo up either havig noted the pile of cracked 78 series diff housings at the A'Springs toyota dealer. The nissan has thin chassis walls and the toyota thin diff housings.

Lux,
We bought our 79 series about 18 months ago second hand. There are always some little bits that need to be sorted, we have spent some time doing these for our truck.

I wounder if we have not been better off buying new as the second hand price seems too steep to me. If you decide on a Toyota remember that there has been a recent recall to exchange the rotor component in the from hubs. Just hope that you don't have to get the strarter motor out it is a wretch, believe me. The stupid oil filter is upside down also, so when you take it off about half a litre of oil goes on the garage floor....... After so many years of selling the same truck you'd think they'd get this right.

I made the same comparison 2 years ago:

Nissan was $5-10k cheaper second hand.
Toyota had better motor - more power, torque and better fuel consumption. Both motors are very reliable.
Nissan has stronger diffs
Toyota has stronger gearbox (H150F) - TD models. Most Nissan boxes are good, but 5th gear failures did occur during that period.
Toyota has longer wheelbase - poorer rampover angle
Toyota has stronger chassis
Toyota has higher payload
Nissan has coil spring option, but chassis cracks
Toyota has better cooling system
Toyota has better forward visibility
Nissan is 100mm wider (and takes wider tray)
Toyota has old fashioned dash, Nissan has more modern plastic dash.
Toyota are more common out in the donga, as are their spares.
Toyota has twin fuel filters. Not sure what Nissan has.

Both good vehicles, but I went Toyota because of the 1HD-FTE and Gearbox.

Cheers

Your information is not all correct. The Nissan gearbox is actually stronger. The only problem with the Nissan gearbox was in older models (1999-2000) and that was caused by a manufacturing fault on behalf of a supplier. The 5th gear spline was too short. That was rectified and there have been no further problems with the gearbox.

There are other points I also disagree with you about.

2nd that about the gearbox. Have a look underneath and note the size of the nissan gearbox, not the smoothest box around though.

Tjilpi,
Toyota had 2 gearboxes in the 79series - one that was weak (R151F behind the 1Hz) and one that was not (H150F behind the TD and 1FZ-FE). The original post refers only to the factory TD, which all had the stronger box. I was referring to the 5th gear problem with the GU box on the years you mentioned, and which may be considered by the

I don't mind you disagreeing - after all thats what forums are about!

And Warthog, I think you'll find the H150F and the Nissan box have a lot in common - even their unsmoothness :-)))

Both vehicles are good; each with their own idiosyncrasies

My concern would be with cabin comfort, as at 190cm tall I find the Nissan easier to drive and easier in cabin space. But if you are short at one end, then it doesn't matter and you have to decide which way to go on reliability and functionality

Gday Willem,
Just wondering whether you're referring to the 75series rather than 79series.
In 1999, Toyota made the cab 5 inches longer.
My son is 198cm tall and sits fine in the 79series. I'm a shortie at only 185cm :-))

Hello Phil

The 75 series was PITA as far as comfort goes. You had nowhere to go with your left leg if you were over 150cm tall...lol. The 78/79 series is a lot better.

Having driven both the Nissan and the Toyota I feel more comfortable in the Nissan. But thats just me. Yes I know you are tall. lol....I looked at a photo of the two of us recently standing next to one another at the TBP in Adelaide a couple of years ago......

Cheers

2006 turbo diesel cruiser .

Look for sand under body and check roof gutter for any rust spots.

We have only done 12000km but cannot fault it.

I would fit air bags If any load near the GVM.
