The nimble X Trail has a nasty shudder when braking around the 100 - 90 Km/h range. Since it is due for a service I asked the service centre about checking the wear on the brake pads etc due to the shudder, they reckon that it needs to have the discs machined. At a cost of $110.00.
Is this a good price for SW
Sydney?
Or are they just chasing extras on top of the service. The service is on Friday by the way (the 13th :))
Am I better off getting the brakes done else where i.e. at the tyre place when I put new tyres on it?
Cheers Kev

The X Trail rotors are soft and wear quite quickly. More often than not they are worn below the minimum machining thickness which I think is 26mm from memory and have to be replaced, make sure they are measured first. As for cost I'm not sure about
Sydney but around the $70 mark is normal up here.
Cheers Jon

Check the cost of new ones first. Some common vehicle discs are quite cheap and if you can fit yourself it could be worth while.

Hi Kev,
like Doug I was very suprised at the low cost of OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) discs. They were Toyota. Have not enquired about other makes but the genuine were so cheap that it was not worth mucking around when doing a complete brake o/h. I must admit though that the prices that I had were for wholesale not retail.

For ants on the keyboard problems, simply dunk your computer in a bucket of cold milk. The ants swim to the surface when they run out of breath and are easily spotted so they can be readily scooped off using a net made from ladies stockings stretched over a coathanger. Once rinsed and towelled dry, they can be relocated back to the garden. Hey presto! Problem solved.

They can either machine them on the vehicle or off.
I take them off and go down to the local brake
shop - got 4 done last month on an R31 Skyline for $18 each.

Kev
A couple of weeks ago I had to replace the rotors on our VW Golf VR6 and I was dreading the cost. They come from DBA and were $75 each for the front. At that price I will never machine again @ $50 each rotor. When the Patrol needs new brakes I will fit new rotors from DBA as
well as I imagine genuine from Mr Nissan will be VERY expensive.
Cheers, Graeme

Hi Kev M
Your Nissan has slip off or top hat style rotors so minimum labour required to remove. I would start by machining fronts first as these are usually 90% the cause of shudder as they do most of the work.
You can check my website at brake shudder for how and why they do it. You can also contact me via the email in the site if you would like a quote or to get an idea on what we charge.
Makes for some interesting reading.

120,
Interesting reading,
I will keep the offer in mind. I will probably get it done in a few weeks (after I am able to drive again after the operation).
Thanks Kev
