I am going to spend a week at this national park.

My question is which camp area?

Also I will spend a week at Byfield national park.

Which area here?

Just got back from spending the afternoon at Cape Palmerston yesterday.....bugger all people there (6 groups of campers i would say). It takes about 1 hour to drive from the park boundary to any of the campsites, either on the beach or the inland track, which wasn't too bad yesterday.

Windmill bay camping area was the fullest (about 4 large tents) though the wind was strong (always is on this side of the cape due to the prevailing southeastlies), Clarke bay had 2 tents setup yesterday with some pleasant eind-protected partly-shaded campsites, Cape creek was fairly quite with more open areas for larger groups.

I would camp at the Clarke Bay camp area, though you may need to know the way in as it isn't sign-posted greatly. Windmill bay has a drop-toilet with the rest basic camping only. Best to just drive (either the inland track or the beach track) to Windmill bay, check out the camping area, drive 10 minutes further on to Clarke bay (need to pick the right track) then either backtrack or take a little travelled track over to cape creek (20+ minutes). You can also camp under the casuarinas on the beach, just as you get into the park proper (the first beach access point). There were around 6 families camped in this area yesterday.

If you are going for the week, i guess you will be doing some fishing ;-)

As for byfield NP, i always like camping at Stony Creek camping area, pleasant, grassy, good swimming etc.

If you want some further details, including a full GPS tracklog of the area, just ask away :-)

Thank you Andrew.

Yes I will be doing some fishing.

We have a c/t would this be a problem?

Some camp areas have bollards and you can not get access with c/t.

Yes I would be interested in the GPS track notes.

The camper trailer probably would have trouble on the inland track due to the narrow nature of the track (the pajero avoided scratching just), though it depends on size of the CT. There are some twists and turns on this track which probably would limit the CT.

As long as you are happy in beach travelling with a CT, then this should be fine. Most 4wds with boat trailers travel the beach route.

There are no real bollards to contend with, even though there are timber railings to define the external boundaries of the whole camping area. Don't worry about them being an issue.

I'll get the log off the GPS, trim it into a managable file and upload to my website area soon.

Hi Andrew,

What's your website URL? Would like to have a nosey if thats OK?

We just got back from 4 days at Notch Point. We originally wanted to go to Cape Palmerston but missed the early tide at 6:30am Friday morning so drove down to Carmila. This was absolutely packed so checked out Notch. There was only around 8 groups on the ocean side (around 30+ on the leeward side of the hill) so it was easy to find a nice shady spot. The wind got pretty fierce for most of it but we still had a nice fire, roast dinners and no issues with the camper pulling pegs etc.

A lot had pulled up camp by Sunday or left after 2 hours of trying to setup their dome tents on Friday which were just flattened by the winds.

Still trying to get a camping trip into Cape Palmerston so maybe the next couple of weeks.

Regards
David

I'll get it done today sometime(i just finished demolishing the whole kitchen so have to keep the Mother-in-Law happy by making a washing up area).

Never been to Notch Point.....keep missing the turnoff. Good camping i take it?

I'll post the area when it's uploaded (more of a secure data storage site than "who am i and what is my interests" site)....might even get to upload to an area on EO.

Thanks Andrew for the info.

Towing the c/t is no problem.I have done Cape York and the High Country with it.

Have done Fraser Island Many times also.

I look foreward to the notes.

Also Notch Point sounds interresting.

Sorry about the delay (two weeks to built a new kitchen AND move to brisbane at the same time is fun!)...

I have filtered the tracklog to reduce the size to less than 2000 trackpoints and have uploaded it as a OziExplorer file (.plt) to a sub-directory ==> www.jaiper.net/GPS/

Give me a yell if you want it converted to another format....simple process.

If i find some more time, i'll place some waypoints at the various locations, distinguish the actual tracks into beach, inland road, overgrown track etc etc.

I've driven into Notch Point and checked it out but never stayed. Is it on private property there? Any rules about camping, fees etc?
Sorry hope I'm not hijacking the thread - but there's not often a discussion of these areas.
