Hi Everyone,

We are doing a 3 week trek from Sydney to Alice Springs in mid May07. (4weeks away) Our solo trek starts from Cameron Corner where we will say good bye to our travelling companion and head for Birdsville. If anyone is crossing the Simpson east to west around this time (16 or 17th May) please let us know. Although we are in a well prepared GU Patrol, safety is paramount in numbers.

I'm sure you wouldn't be solo on the Simpson in May !!

When we did the Simpson trip in 2001, we started as a 'solo' vehicle- and got to Birdsville in a convoy of 5 other 'solo' vehicles- and that was in May..
and we've had the pleasure of doing more trips with some of those people since..

In May 04, I did a trip from West to East on the Gunbarrell, took 5 days and saw only 1 tagalong (Of course it was just as I started to relieve myself in plain view). then South along the Finke and again saw only 1 car, was 1 other car at Chambers Pillar (Got a great view of the Lunar Eclipse). Then the Simpson, stopped off for a few Bourbons at Mount Dare and I think I was the only one there. There was a few campers at Dalhousie Springs but again I saw only one other car traveling East to West, I took 4 days. Then did the hard yards and drove back to Sydney with only a 3 hour stop at Orange.

There's hoards of travellers out there every year - they start as soon as they can stand the last high heat of summer (we talk to them, via VKS737 skeds) - they are out there this week..... your main problem may be the oncoming traffic ! You are correct of course re safety - best to assume nothing re help from others ..... bit of a burden when solo, carrying hardware for every possible issue ..... such a bonus when vital (heavy) gear can be shared with others in a group...... more room overall for beer and good red wine :-o)

Hi Dan and Bridget,

I'll be in Birdsville about that time and am intending to cross east to west. I think 18th-19th is more realistic for me as I leave Melbourne on 13/05. Driving a well equiped patrol and coming up the track via the Flinders Ranges. Intend to head up towards Finke once on the other side of the Simpson and then out to Kulgera. First part of a 10 week trek heading to the west. If these dates corrospond with yours, fire me off an email address via this thread and I'll be in contact. Cheers. Mick.
