I am looking at buying a new tent. At present we have a dome but am looking at getting a touring tent as we are going either west or North in the June school holidays. Need something that is quick to erect each night.
Know about the Southern cross and co that are in the +$1000 mark. At present don't have that money but was wondering what the Oztrail are like? The other option is the Black Wolf lite version. Any thoughts on either of these please.
Also, trying to decide if to but x2 smaller tents. X1 for the parents and X1 for the two kids. Or go for a slightly larger single tent like the touring plus or the Black wolf FS270 plus from B?F. Any thoughts on this would also be appreciated.
regards

Oztrail are a reasonable tent at a great price. Mine is 3 years old - seams are stretched (so you can't peg it down nice and tight) - no matter what, there are sags, which then puts pressure on the zips (which have now failed too ( a couple of 11yo busting for a pee in the middle of the night hasn't helped ;-)

Floor isn't PVC, but that cheap meshy stuff (which if put on top of shade cloth will last but isn't waterproof)

Many more reports in the archives on Oztrail.

There are some good quality tents at a good price (ie Red Desert - though only some come with a PVC floor)

We bought the Oztrail to see if we liked the centre pole tent rather than the dome - now that is confirmed, we'll be looking for a good quality tent (Southern Cross, Freedom etc)

We have the Black Wolf Turbo 240 and find it a great tent and easy to put up.

It is a reasonable size and you can easily stand in it, plus it has an external frame which makes it strong and a sinch to popup. A lot of the time you don't even need to use the gyropes as the structure holds itself.

We also got the Deluxe Fly (annexe) and find that more difficult to put up so we will only be using that if we really have to and just use the normal fly that comes with the tent.

Further, the Turbo series is polycotton canvas with a heavy duty PVC floor, and the the TurboLite series is polyester with a polyethelyne floor.

We too changed from a dome to tourer tent. We looked at many different brands all have there pros and cons, with one of the biggest negatives for some being the price and the size (e.g. RV4)

So then with an idea of what we wanted, I started looking second hand, and found a new tent for a second hand price- had never been taken out of the bag! the people we brought it off had gone straight out and brought a camper- hence they did not need the tent. Some other friends brought one of the coleman? tourers secondhand- came in at half the price if they had to buy it new.

Dont be afraid to look at the second hand market, as good bargains can be had if the tent has been looked after. Do your research, know what it is you want from a tent and then take some time to look

Thanks for the info. Have been looking at the seconhand market. Not much out there. When there has been it has been rather expensive.
I guess the advantage of the Black Wolf is that they dry abit quicker.
Will keep looking.

We have been using a Turbo for a couple of years now. Best tent we've ever used in all kinds of conditions. Great for a night or a couple of weeks.

Hi Howdydoody
Have you had a canvas tent before the Turbo? If so, why do you prefr the Turbo over the Canvas?

We used dome tents for years. My very first tent was a 3man dome. We kept upgrading and upgrading and the domes did very well. We even camped in the middle of winter throughout Gippsland. Eventually we bit the bullet and got the canvas. Partner works in a camping store and had a lot of experience with the different brands available. We settled on a Turbo (I think its a 240). Takes up more space but is the best tent we've ever used. We've had it in 6 days of solid rain and wind along the coast, middle of winter and scorching sun. Still going strong and not one single problem. We have now got the extension for the front to add the extra room for longer trips. The only downside I can think of is the size when packed versus a dome. Way too many pros that make it better though - including warmer to sleep in at night during winter and during summer you just sleep with the windows open, standing upright inside even when standing in the corners next to bed, will last a lot longer than many domes. Even the small details. Nice chunky zips that don't catch and pull, zippered windows, guy ropes are attached to the tent in little zippered pockets at each corner, the list goes on.
We now have several friends with children that have purchased larger versions and they are all wrapped.

Hi mate,
I am selling my canvas touring tent. It was made for commercial tours and is top quality Australian canvas (not that cheap chinese crap). It has two poles, one on each side rather than one in the middle so you can fit a king size matteress in it.
I will try to get pics this arvo to put it on ebay. But if you are interested, I'll hold off a day or two. I'm after $350 for it.

Hi Grunter
What are the speedy tents like? How do they go in the rain and wind?
Have thought of this type of option? Main tent for us and the kids get a small one to just sleep in.

The speedy tents are super easy to put up (they do work exactly like the you see in the ads) In the wind they seem to be pretty good as long as they are pegged down.has only been in light rain & handled it well with no leaks etc.we normally put it up under the prado's side awning for extra shelter.

the selling points for us were the light weight,no poles, attached fly, quick & easy to put up,& gave the boys a little independance & something of their own.
we purchased for abouy $120 & thought it was a good buy for what you get.
hope this helps.

They sound good. Is there much room left after the two kids are in there? The fly is on the iside or something like that isn't it?
How do find the Turbo. Enough room to fit the kids in if the weather turns ugly?
Do you always use the fly?
Been wondering if they are a better option than the canvas. At least they can be wiped down with a towell in the morning if there has been a heavy dew/rain and pack up abit dryer than what a canvas tent would be.

There is not much room left.we put the boys on small stretchers & they pretty well take up most of the room.the top & sides are double layered with a gap in between & im not sure whether the inside or outside layer is the fly but it seems to work well.
we find the turbo excellent & a little more heavy duty than the lite model.we have stretchers too so we can use storage space underneath but if good times went bad we could all fit in turbo if dont use stretchers.
we use fly on turbo most of time just in case things turn bad, just a bit of extra protection.if does get wet will dry fairly quickly.
find a retailer of the speedy tent & have a good look & ask them to pack up & unpack it so you can check it out.
Glad to help.

I recently saw a Tambo tent put out by Tambo Campers.
I was very impressed with quality, easy set up, space and price.
Worth checking their web page

We purchased a Freedom touring tent 2nd hand and it is fabulous ($600). 4 pegs and a centre pole.

Would be ideal.
