I have one of the old green Engel fridges. The only problem is that it wil not run on 12v only 240v
Do any of you out there know of a reason for this and can it be repaired at not too high a cost?

Well, we know the compressor unit is working (on 240v), so the problem is obviously in the 12v supply...
At the back of the 'fridge, near where the leads plug in, there is a fuse, and also a circuit breaker (red button)..
Check these, if OK, then see if you can borrow a known to be good (12v) lead and see how ya go;-).. The leads (& moulded socket on the end) are known to fail occasionally...
Also, make sure ya got power at the lighter socket;-))
I bought my 29L second-hand more than 28 years ago .. I replaced the (12v) lead about 5 years ago due to a bad connection at the 'fridge end, and that's the only problem it's ever had in it's life:)).. Still works as good as new:-)

what the previous poster said was all true but may I add one thing, If after you have checked the lead, fuse, power etc, and it still does not work, the fault is probably inside the compressor. These units have dual windings inside the compressor (axial vibrator style) and have a 240v coil, wound next to a 12v coil. If the 12 volt coil is damaged (open circiuted) there is nothing you can do about it.

Must admit, I haven't looked inside an Engel for a while, but earlier ones had a single 20v input to the compressor, with the 240v stepped down to 20v and the 12vdc stepped up to 20vac. Both 240v and 12v shared the same transformer.
In this type of arrangement, if it works off 240v ok, but not 12v, then the compressor is ok, the transformer is ok, but the inverter circuit may be stuffed, or 12v is not getting through to the inverter.
Check with an AC voltmeter: you should be getting about 20vac to the input of the compressor, both when on 240v and 12v. If you know a techie, he should be able to help out.

I claimed insurance after the repairer gave me a written estimate, all up it cost me

Ray,
This is not unusual, and the transformer etc. on the older ones can be replaced and away it will go on either 12 or 240V.
If you are in
Sydney take it to Alternate Gas at Arndell Park.
One of
mine has had the electrics replaced once and the compressor replaced a number of years back. It is a 1981 vintage from memory.
Regards,
Jim
