Back in 1994 we saw a brand new, unused, small airport somewhere between Mt Elisabeth Station and El Questro on the Gibb River Road.
What was its name, and is it of any use.
Thanks

There are small airfields all over the place in the Kimberly. Most are related to local communities or stations. If you can get hold of an aviation map of the area it will tell you about most fields and if they are private etc. You could try ringing Air Services Australia. They check all flight plans so may be able to help you.

Hi fanfan

Flash up Google Earth and take a look along the Gibb River road at the appropriate places.

I use Google Earth to check out sites that I have not visited.

Cheers

Hello - just had a quick flick through the 50K maps of the area.

There is a landing strip directly adjacent to the road at 15° 58' 24.7930" S 127° 9' 2.7342" E (WGS84) This is about 1.5km west of the Durack River or about 12 or 13km east of the turn off to Ellenbrae Homestead. The map sheet (Mt Dorothy)was printed in 1997 and states that the landing ground is "disused". The strip is about 780m long. No name shown.

There is another larger landing ground (1.6km long) adjacent to the GRR at 15° 50' 24.0380" S 127° 26' 56.9472" E (WGS84). This is about 3 km east of Jacks Waterhole (Durack River HS). This is on the Mosquito Hills map sheet also printed in 1997 and states that the landing ground is "disused". No name shown.

In proximity to the GRR there are also landing strips at the Ngallangunda Community (Gib River Homestead), Ellenbrae Homestead.

Cheers
Greg

I sent one final shout after him to stick to the track, to which he replied “All right,” That was the last ever seen of Gibson - E Giles 23 April 1874

Well ..examination of the airfields on Google Earth suggests that landing strip near Jacks Waterhole is well and truly overgrown and barely discernable (assuming the airphoto was taken after the 1997 map was produced). The smaller strip is also somewhat overgrown.

Hi,

The strip you mention was put in not long before Jacks Hole was washed away, I doubt it was ever used and it has never been maintained since , as you found by looking at Google forget it. It was only mother eart cleared anyway & gather it was to soft in places.
All airstrips along the Gibb & Kalumburu Roads are privately owned and maintained and require prior permission to land. The only ones that are serviced for use are those attached to working stations or lived in communities. Some strips that are still shown on maps that have been U/S for 25 to 35 years !
Had a chap tell me a few years back he was going to land at Mitchell River strip, well that had a 5 ft deep gutter down the center when I fist saw it over 20 years ago. I think it is still today shown as a strip on a lot of maps.

cheers, Anne
