Hello all,
I have just (yesterday) had my fridge repaired after the cooling unit failed - Thought the sydney - based people would like to hear of who done it and how it went.
I had just bought a van and the fridge died the first time it was plugged in - no sign of ammonia smell before but as soon as it started to heat up the gas was overpowering - burnt the eyes and throat. It took two hours after I turned it off with a fan blowing in the door before I could go inside.
There wern't any obvious signs of leakage noticable from the outside.
The repairer was Caravan Fridge Repair of minchinbury - They replaced the cooling unit wiuth a reconditioned one and have a 12 month warranty for $470. It took about 2 hours which was easily spent at the westfield just a few k's up the road.
In making enquiries I also must commend Alternate Gas Fridges of Arndell Park, I believe that they were the reconditioners of the cooling unit that went into my fridge but at any rate, Bob's answers to my myriad of questions including the toxicity of the ammonia gas were thorough and very well written - he also offered to do electrical certification on the 240V system and check the 12V and Gas systems in the fridge repair price - If I hadn't already booked with CFR, I probably would have had them do the work.
All in all, the price was reasonable considering that the replacement of the fridge is 1200 - 1400 dollars.
All in all, it was an excellent result - the only downside was that to reposition the heat deflector sheet above the fridge I had to remove the top ventilation grill which had been sealed with silastic - I slipped cutting the seal and cut my knuckle to the bone on the aluiminium siding of the van - should have been wearing gloves.
Yours with band-aided fingers and cold beer,
Wayne
