Hi All

Planning the last part of the trip over to SA. Thinking of going from Wommera back to Kingoonya down to the Gawler Ranges and popping out somewhere like Yanee or Minnipa.
Has anyone been through that area? What’s the track like?
From the Gawler ranges back to the Eyre Hwy I’ll be on my own, I take it pretty easy and am towing a CT, are these tracks OK for that?

Dunno bout these days but we used to cruise all those roads in 2wds. Used to be good for shooting till they made it a NP.
Used to drive north from Pygery to Mt allalone and Mt Wash then take the old rabbit fence through to the Minnipa road. If we had more money for fuel go out further around paney station.
dont ask me for detailed directions coz it was along time ago and we were usually just driving aimlessly around looking for roos

Yeah mate

Easy 2wd roads. Even Gawler Ranges National Park tracks can be done in 2wd.
Visit the Organ Pipes(Rhyolite formation) in the Gawler Ranges NP. Interesting spot.

Cheers

IMHO Kolay Mirica Falls in the Gawler Ranges National Park are better than the Organ Pipes. You bush camp nearby at or beside Kolay Hut, hut has toilets. Get an Upper Eyre Peninsula RAA map from your local motoring assiciation. This has sufficient detail. It is also possible to go Kingoonya then South past the Old Watering Tank, turn West to Yardea Station along the ole Perth Road, then SW on Yardea Road for about 10km or so, then turn East abd enter the Park from the NW past Pondanna Outstation to Mirica Falls. This last is not shown as continuous track on the RAA map, but can be done. Phone the Ranger for details & hints.
All roads you (& I) mention are easy with a 4WD, unless wet.

If you are looking for something different, Fill all supplies at Glendambo, from Kingoonya, travel to Tarcoola, (closed town no services) and go down googs track to Ceduna.
Now this is a sand track only suitable to 4wd and off road CT.
Similar on a small scale to simpson desert. Let tyres down to sand pressures, and monitor UHF 18 for any oncoming traffic.
Great bush camping at Mt Finke, and Googs lakes if you want.
Will take full day at a steady pace.
You come out on the perth side of Ceduna, and word of warning you have to go through the fruit fly stn on the way in.
If you tell them where you have come from they usually let you through.
You could still divert off to Gawler ranges if you like and back up again.
Good camping, 4wd tracks and fuel at Mt Ive Stn also.

Cheers Pesty

Hi Pesty,
is this track OK for a single vehicle (no winch)?
Is the track easy to find?

We went from Glendambo to Kingoonya, then on to Wirrulla this time last year. The road was very corrugated, but otherwise a regular road - i know people who have travelled it in sedans.

Check air filters if driving in convoys, it will block up with dust in no time.
