I have been looking for some tracks and shot lines out in the Great Sandy.

Have found what I am looking for sort-of. Shot line comes into view at around 50,000feet and is visible until around the 10,000feet mark where it goes out of focus.

Have looked at Help but am none the wiser. Can one get a clearer picture closer up? I am using GE DirectX mode

Cheers

I don't bother with Google Earth anymore after I spat the dummy when I could not locate the CSR on it .

Good thing is I have laptop on mapping and then follow along with co-ordinates on Google to find the right place.

I have waypoints from my two trips up there . I know where it is , but I still can't see it .

I would like to think that too much sex has ruined my eyesight , but unfortunately , I think it is really the lousy image on Google Earth .

Can you give us a couple of examples to see what you mean - just a co-ord or two.

If you mean the line overlays to indicate roads they are meant to disapear when the road comes into good view.

Disco

I am looking at 20 05.06.10 South and 123 31.44.13 East

Track to left is overgrown and not discernable but shot line is visible in places.

I would like to get closer to see some of the terrain. ( I have a pretty good idea what it looks like anyway...lol)

I put in 20 05 06.10 S, 123 31 44.13 E and the country at this is not very good resolution. The coverage of Australia is not all the same resolution. There does not seem to be any rhyme or reason for the change in resolution boundaries. There are parts of Sydney at low resolution and some desert regions at high resolution.

I have not used Google earth for a while , mainly because I have Ubuntu linux as an operating system , but after seeing your post I decided to give it another go as I have upgraded to Ubuntu 7.04 Fiesty and would you believe it is that clear now . I can see the house that I used to have in the Alice very clearly and our house in Broken Hill is recognisable . I will try to look for the seismic lines in the desert and see how clear they are , but I am impressed with the way google earth now works in linux :)

Not sure what you are talking about Pete

I can see my house in Peterborough but it seems to be an old photo taken about 5 years ago

Hi Willem

You will never see that detail out there, not when it's green, max zoom 10.27km, you can see the cleared line heading NNE but cannot see the track in

The brown areas you can zoom down to 600-800 m but unless the yanks where looking for something the picks are poor..LOL

Try areal photos (maybe)

Expensive, but effective option.

Last time I bought Aerials from the Government Contractor (2003) they cost me $53 each for the first 1 of a run and $23 each for every 1 in the run thereafter. From: United Photo & Graphic Services, Blackburn Victoria.

As opposed to when I purchased literally hundreds of them off Ebay for a song. :)

I know the feeling, I've got maps and photos sprawled across the desk right now.

I'd like to visit some sections of the Sandy maybe next year. Dragon Tree Soak and Joanna Spring, come to mind. One year at a time though.

Joanna Springs was on Col. Warburton's route.

The Famous Calvert Exp. of 1896 led by Wells had great trouble in locating it as Warbuton's Longtitude was out.

It's roughly mid-way between Dragon Tree and Gwenneth Lakes (or so we are told)

Its amazing what one can dig up.

I have the book on the Calvert Expedition and in the back of it the maps of the various explorers of that era in the north west.

I have the Lat co-ord for Joanna Spring. Richards one is not the same...lol

Yeah OK So Joanna Spring is marked on the Natmaps
Approximate position 20 04.970S and 124 11.835 E

It would seem that there is a cleared shot line running along the dune corridor to within striking distance of Joanna Spring with no more than 15 or so dunes to cross to get there. This cleared line comes off the one from the Kidson.

Of course cleared lines could be more overgrown than the surrounding countryside.

Could be the makings of an expedition. Start from Sandfire and then head east along Kidson.

Food for thought. Sir Willie might be interested but he would have to get better tyres for the LC. This is HD Crossply cheesecutter tyre country......lol

Ummm I believe they are still selling fuel and will rebuild what burnt down

Maybe I am wrong?

This adventure won't start until mid 2008 so that gives lots of time for planning.
Need to carry max fuel loads.
