Good one Mal.
Yeah, old, or damp beads will cause grief for sure.
That is why I generally buy the 3 kg bag of Heat Beads EasyLites. Less chance of them "going off".
No smell from the Fire lighters? That used to be the big downside to them.
I must say, I quite often cheat and use a gas torch on the heat beads to get them burning quicker. You can also sit the fire cage with the briquettes over a gas ring.
I generally use this method when using heat beats for the
camp oven, due to the quantity used.
So now you are an "expert" on cooking with the Cobb and you will never ever get any rest again:-)
Good fun isn't it?

Pour a little metho into a sardine tin and place under heat beads is a good way to get the beads going.
