BFG or Cooper

Hi all,

Can anyone give me a comparison of cost of and mileage between BFG tyres and Cooper tyres running on a Patrol 3 litre diesel. Most driving is bitumen highway withoccassional dirt.

I copy and pasted this of a post I did the other day.

I swear by the OZ made Bridgestone A/T duellers, I run them on 4 Landcruisers and done so for the last 6 years.

D693 265/75R/16s

These tour trucks work hard between Arnhemland, Kakadu and Broome, just make sure that there Oz Made as they are a much stronger tyre than the Japanese made ones.

I've never had a tyre let go yet, in fact I put another set on my new truck last Saturday and I need to replace another set on the troopy soon and that will be my 11th set.

I also get over 60000 km per set.

To me that is tried and tested.

Profits stay in OZ.

Hi Steve,
what pressure do you run in your tyres on the, I had 2 of the Dueller AT fail on me, once doing 110kph and made $1100 damage to rear and one waiting at the red light in Adelaide.

You must be one of the lucky one's that's had no problems with them.

40 psi front 42 psi rear.

I wouldn't call no trouble with 11 sets lucky.

There just a great tyre.

Ask Willem about coopers - he has 8 in his shed he will sell you REALLY cheap.... :)

Give you the tip Truckster the MTR wouldnt fared much better for Willem - I have used a total of about 7 or 8 plugs in my MTR mostly in the sidewalls and shoulders and havead dramas every time I have used them apart from well formed tourist tracks - Very good road tyre though

I'd say its how your using them.

Thru Flinders, they were fine, on Warraweena fine (although one of willems rags spat a pre-repaired tube), thru high country, toolangi, Marysville, on a few of the hard tracks I did with the simexs they were fine.. Only been with one dude who has sliced one, that was at Mt Dissa few weeks ago, but that was his pressures.

Ive found them good on tracks like that but on less well used tracks in the woodlands I have found the shoulders and sdewalls susceptable to wood damage.
I recently did the Yowe rocks track from the Evanston menzies road to Koolynobing and copped 3 punctures all to the shoulder. Done this track quite a few times running rags and the only 2 flats i got were after extended off track xcursions into the nether regions of the area for work andlast did this track with the same veicle running the MRF without incident so proper head to head . ried running lower pressures (28psi) but they only lasted 5 min off the highway.
Point is yea i reckon there a good tyre but they ae still easily damaged out bush

MTR's for Prime Minister - honestly they couldnt do a worse job than Mr Sheene..

dude dont get so stressed, its a bit of fun.. u know I was bleep ed iwthout your assistance... .. You should just have had MTR's :P

have had coopers and bfg's i found the coopers were very suseptable to damage in the side walls. i always seem to end up back with bfg mud or all terrain

Watch all the opinions come out of the woodwork now!

I had several sets of BFG TA's on my 80 series and had a very good run until the 3rd set. Changed over to Coopers ST's when I got my GU 3.0TD and only replaced them this weekend after 86,000km. Still had ~35% tread but have now put them on my camper + used for spares.

While I had a very good run with the ST's and was more than happy to buy them again, others have had issues. But then again others have had a good run with BFG's while I had issues!!!

Bottom line is, both are good tyres but YMMV

On second set of 285/75/R16 BFG AT's on a GU 2.8 Patrol. A mate had the tyre dealer tell him these are illegal on a GU so he got 265's but this is shiezer. The 285's make the GU speedo almost accurate at highway speeds (102km/hr on GPS, 100 on speedo) where it was (94km/hr GPS, 100 on speedo before).

As I said the other day these tires run on my four trucks and yet to have a problem. Got them for $275 fitted and balanced each on 98 GU ST steel rims. From memory 285/75Cooper ST's were $307 each and 265/75 ATR's were $260 ea.

The work truck and GU do alot of highway and sand kilometers but both have gone to the cape three times each without probs. The Jeep and Bush Basher have done everything and no probs either. Tried the rest (coopers, yokohama, pirelli, factory fitted bridgestones) and will not go back to any of them.

This question is just like starting another Toyota Vs Nissan war........ and seing as I own both I going to be a lazy fence sitter when answering this specific question.

If most of your driving is on bitumen with the occasional dirt trip why not have a look at the Michellin LTX AT's.

Mate of mine is running them out of Broken Hill on a 3lt GU and has over 80,000km so far. He reckons he will replace them in a month or so. That would mean he would have done about 90,000km on them with no problems at all.

He does a bit of playing and has been on a couple of trips with me to the Flinders Ranges and Innamincka. We did some pretty high speeds on dirt roads on the way back from Innamincka too.

I am running Cooper ST/C's and am reasonably happy with them too.

I'm not going to buy into the argument between brands as I've never tried the Coopers on my own vehicle. I have had BFG's and I work in country guaranteed to puncture tyres, and yet with 115,000 km in two years in my Pajero, I have no idea where the jack is in that car. That should tell you something.

Oops, forgot about costs and Kms.

Mine were 265 70/R16's at $269.00 per corner. I got 45.000 Km out of the first set, 50,00Km out of the second set and still on the third set. I drive along gas pipelines where the tracks no longer exist and I pull my 1.2 tonne off road CT along for a lot of the time.

To me, this wear is pretty good and compares with my off-sider who goes to the same places and pulls a 2 tonne caravan some of the time. He also uses BFG's.

Neither of us has blown a tyre in two years!
