Hi all,
Need some general advice on travelling from
Birdsville to
Winton. We're towing a CT and we're aiming to overnight around
Windorah or
Jundah but, I'm not sure about the next stage up to
Winton. Heading up to
Winton solely to call in to Larks Quarry & maybe the Matilda Centre & then from
Winton to Longreach, so, my question is ..... can anyone shed some light on the road from
Jundah to
Winton - what's it like (generally); are there any spots to stop for the night if we feel that it is too much for 1 day?
Any comments welcome.
Thanks

Hello - you can go
Birdsville to
Bedourie (179 klm - 80 klm bitumen and the rest good dirt) then 200 klm to
Boulia (120 klms bitumen and the rest good dirt) then go east to
Winton on bitumen, then down to
Longreach.
Boulia is very interesting and has a great Min Min Light Information and Interpretative Centre, green grass and nice caravan
park on the banks of the Burke River.

Hey there Mac,if you get to
Boulia head towards
Winton, turn off about 27ks out of
Boulia to the right & go to the Lark Quary through the Diamantina N P you won't be dissapointed we came the opposite way last June & love the Diamatina wellworth in my view.

Jundah to
Longreach is bitumen. After travelling up past the Stonhenge turnoff towards
Longreach there is the turn to the left up towards
Winton and lark quarry is up that road also. This is usually good gravel road but depends on recent weather. Easily done in a day.
Between
Jundah and Stonhenge there is a
native well on the left side of the road and near Stonhenge there is a scenic loop road on the right (can't think of the name but it
well signposted) which takes you into surrounding hills etc.
On the left as you approach Stonhenge there is a
lookout on the left. Travellers often
camp there (no amenities)
