Hello to all. I have been reading for a while now since stumbling across this site when researching a Corner Country trip we are doing in August and have found heaps of useful info. Thanks.
I am considering buying a Pajero TD 2.8 99 model and I am wondering if there are any major known problems with these motors. I have seen one with 220k's on it in good nick body and interior wise I might be able to get for 13K.
I have heard something about heads cracking, any thoughts appreciated.

Hi Col88.
I had a NL 2.8 pajero for 4 years. A great vehicle. I increased the boost & never had any overheating/head problems.
I sold the vehicle about 3 months ago for $13500 (150000kms) & left all my offroad gear on it. 13k for a 220k vehicle seems a little high. Has it got any extras for this price?

We are heading to the corner country from Tweed Heads early July for 2 weeks & will base ourselves aroundTibooburra. Are you calling in at Hungerford & Currawina National Park?

I have the 96 2.8l with 290,000k.
Had it since new.
Yes, head cracking is a known problem. But it occurs when some one hasn't been careful with flushing the cooling system and using the right/compatible coolant additive. How often has the cooling system been serviced?

Other issues besides the usual 4wd and car things to check.

Makesure oil changes are on time and done properly.
Check what oil has been used and to spec.

Fuel injection pump can need new seals in the 200,000s, depending on how dirty the fuel has been. Like all diesels, clean fuel is important, so check fuel filters done every 20,000k as recommended. Stuttering of the engine a minute or so after a cold start is one sign of the seals going, besdies the leaks.

Check out front suspension and drive shafts for noises changing direction etc. Joints and CV joints do wear.

Change from 2wd to 4wd a few times to make sure it changes OK.
Little use sees the system get unreliable. Look for the shift lights on the dash flashing for much more than 5 to 10 seconds.

No known rust problems unless used on the beach a lot.

If original clutch could be near it's limit.

Make sure injectors and timing belts done every 100,000k.

Make sure the car hasn't been started that day. Glow plugs do wear and you can only check them at a cold start.

Has it a turbo timer? Cooling down the turbo before turning off does give more turbo life.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the replies. I had a '93 petrol before and I am looking for some fuel economy this time. Have heard the TD is a more durable motor than the petrol.
The few I have tested have all had front diff engaging problems probably from lack of use.
The owner is a guy who says he is a farmer/mechanic and did his own servicing, so no books. Says he had timing belt and injectors done professionally and has receipts. Sounds like a fair dinkum sort of a bloke.

Vince, our trip will be staying around the corner/sturt NP, Merty Merty, Innaminka, into QLD, back down through White Cliffs etc. Can't come soon enough.

Sounds like a good trip.
We did that a few years ago, wouldn't mind doing it again.
With two fossickers on board, two weeks wasn't enough :o).
