G'day all, just wondering if anyone knows if permission is required to traverse the Telfer
Mine road, reading the Hema map & after we do the
Gary Junction road we plan on leaving via the
Telfer road & it states you need to call & get the OK from Newcrest.
Has anyone called for permission before, or should we just head out & play dumb if we get stopped.
Any information would be helpful.
Thanks

In 2005 when we did the CSR, we had cause to go to Telfer (now there's another story) and the only permission we required was to get onto site, the road from the
Kunawarritji Community to
Marble Bar which passes Punmu appeared to us to be a public road, ( which is extremely slippery when wet) The Telfer
mine road runs off of it. ( I think)
Cheers

mine itself & hope it has not & will not be raining when we get there.
Thanks.

Most of mines don't mind you using access roads, and will even help you out if you get in to serious trouble. But don't expect to be able to arrive at the site and buy diesel and supplies out of the
camp shop. Tourists are generally tolerated rather than welcomed.

Thanks Snowy,
we won't need to call in for supplies as we can carry sufficent fuel & grub for the trip, just hope there is no rain in the area when we get there.
Thanks.

Thanks Richard,
BTW what can you tell me about
Marble Bar, what should we expect when we get there?
Is it a reasonable sized place?
Thanks.

Richard.....Punmu. How you can spell Kmart right and Punmu wrong gets me...LOL
Rod,
Marble Bar is Australias hottest town although the night we were there it went down to minus 1.
Marble Bar is a small hamlet kept alive by tourists and gold seekers. There are two fuel outlets, one with a restaurant and one with a
shop. A nice Caravan Park with new owners(2006). A bush pub with character and some houses.
Marble Bar Gorge is worth the visit to see the wonderful river rocks striated with Jasper. The
Comet Mine is also worth a look and there are little side tracks to explore as
well.
On your way there be sure to turn off and
camp at
Carawine Gorge. It used to be a very nice
gorge(and still is) but some years ago a flood altered the scenery a bit. Still, there is good camping on the river. Collect your own firewood before going in.
Cheers

Thanks gents, will spend a rest day in town so it will give us a chance to have a sticky.
Hard to imagine a flood running through a remote
gorge like that.
Thanks.

Rod M ,
I have been past Telfer twice and each time we were stopped at the boom
gate by what looked like a US marine sargeant . Both times we had permission to use the road which had been gained by the Tagalong operator .
I had heard that anyone heading north was allowed to go through , but people going south towards Rudall were some times stopped if they looked like they were poorly equipped for the trip ahead of them .
I am going through there in July and emailed Newcrest in
Perth for permission . I got an email back saying that if you were a
well equipped vehicle you would not be stopped , "but just in case , keep this email in your glove box" !
However , I believe from memory , if you are travelling to Punmu , you turn off to the north
well before you get to the boom
gate anyway.
Cheers ,
Willie .

I think where the confusion comes in is that the Hema map(old copy) shows the whole road to Punmu as being the
Telfer Road. Where you turn off the bitumen to Punmu is actually the Punmu/
Kunawarritji Road which in turn joins up with the Wapet Rd/Kidson Track. The
Telfer Road runs off the Rippon Hills Road(bitumen) to Woodie Woodie a short distance before the turnoff to
Carawine Gorge. Some of that
Telfer Road was bitumenised(2006) and I think that they will eventually bituminise all of it
I too have heard that they will stop you if you look ill prepared on the run down to Rudall.
Jeddah said something unprintable about your new rig
pic....LOL
