I am considering buying a navigation system, and note that many of them seem to use the Sensis maps of Australia, latest version is 13
I expect they will be fine for use in cities and country highways/roads, but am curious as to how good thay are in the
Vic High country and other off-road
places.
Has anyone used these maps off road?

The Boss (SWMBO) has v10 in her RAV4 - no good for tracks and small towns or country backroads. I've seen the website with the upgrades to V13 but it's not clear about the High Country areas.
I'll watch with anticipation :-)

The best street navigation software in rural areas that includes some High Counrty tracks is any that use Navteq mapping, not Sensis Whereis v13.
2 that I know use Navteq maps are: Route 66 & Destinator PN

If you get a Garmin you will find far outback tracks on the software , right to the tip of
Cape York, the SA/Vic
border track, ETC

G'Day All,
May not be entirely relevant, but last year I took SWMBO's Garmin Streetpilot C310 along for our outback trip. It has the V6.0 mapping installed.
I was quite surprised how many of the outback tracks/roads were actually in the system.
Biggest surprise was it had the turn off and the entire road into the main
homestead on
Willow Springs Station in the Flinders, (Skytrek).
It also had
Cordillo Downs Road, as
well as both
Birdsville and Strezlecki tracks and the turn off to Camerons Corner.
We did 2 1/2 weeks without hitting bitumen and most was mapped on the Streetpilot.
Regards
Rolande

Exactly the issue I try to point out people in the market for a GPS , proof in the 2 posts below this one ,Garmin is the way to go ,Others come up with all these weird and wonderful ideas and software , then you have to carry laptops or get some type of unit to run it , where as in a Garmin GPS it is all there in one little dynamic package, And as we all know if your going truly OFF road as Willem does OziExplorer or Rasters is good for that , but most people want is a unit that has a good range of roads and tracks on it,

I am running the latest version of sensis in my TomTom. Did the High Country in January and the TomTom was useless on the tracks, but did cover all the roads, towns and villages.

Hi Mate,
You should get NavNet. It comes with City maps and with digital Hema topographical maps 2006 of all Australia. It takes you to the
Vic High country or the
Simpson Desert without any trouble.

I use a Magellan Platinum running DiscoverAus Streets and Tracks and it has nearly all the 4x4 tracks I've been on, it shows driveways into properties on the way
home from work and it also covers a lot of the
walking tracks in the Dandenong Ranges.
I've yet to see another system with as much detail.
Regards Andrew.
