Hi - looking for good stops along the way - towing a small van. Proposing o'nite stops at the following stops. Comments/Advice appreciated -facilities/cleanliness/food...

Port Germain?
Glendambo?
Marla/Cadney?
Painted Desert road conditions?
Kulgera?
Curtin Springs?
Ayers Rock Resort?

How many days to see the rock - looks like the minimum permit is 3days?
Kings Canyon?

Have looked at the great advice offered via the forum, but am running out of time and would like current opinion.

Thanks from a happy traveller!

G'day John
We usually drive straight to Cadney the first day. It's a great stop FREE camping at the road house with good showers. The road house does good meals, not compulsory for the free camping. So if you arrive at 5-7pm, have a shower, set up,and go in for a beer.
Re the rock, well worth seeing, climb it one day(if you can or want to), and walk around the base the next(9km). Yep 3 day permit, rock is closed due to high winds some days. They had it open when i climbed it, should have been closed as it was blowing a gale.!! I can't believe someone didn't die that day, so windy my eyes were running so much i could hardly see. Was carrying a back pack, weight approx 5kg, if i had set it down it would have blown away like a feather!. Would be completely different it not windy, probably quite easy if you are fit.
Cheers Lyndon

John,

Cadney is definitely a good one night stopover. I agree with the poster above and also here are some other opinions along the track.

Ayers Rock is awesome! The general opinion is that the resort and the local community are a bit heavy with their charges, but I guess that's their call.

Don't miss the RFDS Connellan's Hangar and the Telegraph Station in Alice.

Safe travelling

I was surprised at how relatively cheap the Ayer's Rock Resort was for our camper trailer, also you can get pretty cheap meals at the Outback Pioneer Lodge.
The supermarket prices were OK too.

Another good place to camp would be at Mount Connor, I believe that you can get the OK from Curtin Springs. Apparently it is very much like camping at Ayer's Rock 40 years ago.

When we stayed at Yulara in the Camping ground it was shocking. So much so that I wrote letters of complaint to the manager and NT Tourism.

They put us in amongst the tour buses. About 60 18 to 35 yr olds who partied all night. When I asked them to keep hte noise down as my young kids were trying to sleep they said OK but did nothing. When I called security they did not come for over an hour and then simply drove oast with their windows up. Didn't even shine a torch around. When I called them back at about 1am they said they had investigated that complaint and there was nothing to worry about.

I eventually called the NT Police who came into the area and asked the bus group to be quiet. They then sat in their car until the lights were all out.

Next night it was a differnet tour group but the same story. I had spoken with the duty manager during the day and she assured me that if I had any more problems she would deal with it. She gave me her mobile number but when I called it it was turned off.

In addition to this the toilets and showers were filthy. Waste bins overflowing mud all over the place and no toilet paper. My 11 year old son was very upset when he got out of the shower to find young women from the tour bus running around in the gents.

Will we ever go back? Not likely. They could not pay me enough.

As for the price, it was a lot more expensive than the Resort Campground at Kings Canyon. There were tour buses there too but they were well behaved probably because of the visible and active security.

Apart form that John we enjoyed our trip to Alice and surrounds. I am not sure what kind of van you have but if you are comfortable on corrugations then Rainbow Valley is worth a look. In Alice Macdonnel Ranges CP is very good.

hi
Cadney is a great stop. Dale and Suzie are great hosts. the fees are now $5 night but well worth the money as hot showers, you can light a fire if you take wood adn the meals are good value.

avoid glendambo if you can, unless someone with initiative has taken it over, marla is also a nice stopover, green lawns, pool, good pub/meals, post office, police and mechanical repairs.

Go have a look at the Painted Desert !
I could spend a week there easily, being overwhelmed by its beauty ,,

Directions

Go to Cadney Park, Turn Right towards Oodnadatta
Then head for Arkaringa Station. Only 84 km on reasonable gravel roads.
You can camp there for $7.50 a person and they even cut the fire wood, Showers and toilets ect ,,, Its all there, and you get to meet some of the nicest people in the world there.
Mt Batterby is only 12 km further in, and check out the " moon plane "
WOW

We are heading back there ASAP

Cheers
Bucky

Thanks for info on Cadney. What's with Glendambo? Dust/Noise/Safety?

Can anyone comment on the free camps suggested noted in the Camps Aust Wide book?
