There is a new firmware version, XL_1_1.55 for the Magellan eXplorist XL that you can download and upload to your GPS that gives you a number of much more imformative nav screens. Looks good to me.

Be careful, there was one up date that apparently made the thing run as slow as a wet week.
I'm not sure on the version though.

The latest update is good and actually runs faster than the original. Also download the update of MapSend Lite V2. Allows running the Discover Aus maps which are supplied in a registered SD card, on a PC. This was not possible previously and a real pain.

There is also an update of the SD card to version 1.5. Apparently give some updates to mapping. We have sent card in for the update so will be interesting to see what has been changed as on a recent trip to the High country & Corner country found some large discrepencies in the mapping.

Hi Johno,

Saving up for a Magellan myself and was just wondering if you could tell me how bad the discrepancies were and if the topo mapping is good.
Also, why did you send the card in for update? cant it be done at home using the usb cable?

G'day Dingo
The discrepancies in the high country were not to bad but some of the tracks between Innamincka & Birdsville via Haddons Corner where not to crash hot (some where out by a lot & some where not there).
I have sent the SD card in to Next Destination as apparently they need to do it, they informed me that you cannot down load from the web. How ever if you have not bought one yet you should get the new card with your purchase.
We had no trouble other than these tracks as we had originally set up our Way points & routes using OziExplorer with the Hema "Great Desert Tracks" (which where spot on)

Hi Dingo
The topo is excellent and looks great when you use it with mapsend (3d)

Yes you update yourself but if people do not feel comfortable to do this i suppose you'd send it in....

Update Instructions

cheers

warfer89,
I was told by the next generation people at the Sydney Rosehill camping show & the WA office that to get the SD card updated to 1.5 had to be done by them, they also charge $99 for this plus postage.
The update to 1.55 for Mapsend lite can be done over the net but this does not update the Mapping

I sent one final shout after him to stick to the track, to which he replied “All right,” That was the last ever seen of Gibson - E Giles 23 April 1874
