I am addicted to exploroz and get lots of really good advice and
information from everyone. What I wondered though, is what did everyone do before exploroz was available?
When we were planning a trip I would always do a rough plan, then phone various towns
tourist information centres. I'd
check out the national parks and phone them too. Sometimes when I couldn't get any info that way, I'd phone the local pub, store or even the
post office and ask them.
I always found people only too ready to tell me where the
good camp spots were, what rodeos, shows etc were going to be on, what
places were interesting to see and if they couldn't they'd point me in the right direction. Sometimes it was like a treasure hunt to find that little gem of info...but it was always great fun.
Another way was to buy any book that I could on the state or area being visited or the Ron & Viv Moon type books with
information from others who'd travelled there already.
By the time we were ready to begin our trip we usually had quite a little library of
information and lots of ideas of where we could go along the way.
With the road conditions we would phone the police stations to ask about the rain and the roads or the Shire Councils too.
I still think that the thrill of tracking things down is a lot of the enjoyment of travelling.
So ... what did you all do...in life before exploroz?

Hi Viv The internet certainly gives us quick acess to a lot of
information through powerful search engines. For example , I am about to leave for
Kakadu (ex Melb tommorrow) going via the
Matilda Way in outback NSW. This morning I was able to find all the LPG stations for the entire trip. (Dual fuel Patrol)
Explore Oz is addictive and most helpful through its members and site.
For example with recent advice on purchasing solar panel , regulator and auxil. battery. Also on Sat. Phone.
I also find the camping and caravan shows to be a great source of
information with travel booklets and helpful torism staff.
Better go , I have another question to ask members before I leave.
Keep on camping!

PS: Although a harsh and unforgiving land even to those
well prepared, I think the abundance of
information available takes a little of the "adventure" and "pioneering spirit" out of travel.
It's that little bit of unknown territory or track that adds to the excitement.
Lionel.

Not obsess about fuel consumption figures, tyre pressures to the second decimal place and be filled racked with indecision about buying a set of tyres.

BATTERIES! you forgot to mention batteries - 'what battery is good for my setup'
FRIDGES! you forgot them as
well
SUSPENSIONS! them as
well
VEHICLES! I know there why you didn't go (LOL)
Yep! it really used to be easy before the advent of the internet and this
forum.
Spend the whole year now researching, R&D-ing, spending heaps of $'s to cover the 'just in case factor', sweating off on whether Roachie or Truckster have got a bigger whatever than I have, (they haven't by the way) it's like the 'cold war' revisited in 4WD land.

Viv,
We still do it with books
got them stacked up all over the place, meant to by out on the GB at the moment but got sick (sleep-ed for four days) and looking at the road conditions on ExplorOz I would be sitting in the mud, not spending all day on this web site...LOL
Yes I fined the site very informative and I like contributing to it e.g plot files,
places, photo's ect..
Before the web back in the 80,s we were
young enough just to do it with a Reader's Digest "Motoring Guide To Australia" which I still have tattered and torn with the roads and tracks hi-lighted to show where we travelled.
No GPS to record plots, boxes full of glossie photo's & neg's that I fined myself scaning into the computer..
I don't know where I get the time to go on trips anymore...LOL

Richard,
We used to use Explore Australia books and as we drove along the kids would ask us "where's the splore australia". We'd make quizzes for them using the
grid references and page numbers...they'd have to work out a cryptic clue and find the place. I'm sure that they learned so much this way.
I enjoy looking things up on the internet and also asking and replying to questions on exploroz, but I still love tracking things down in the old way, with a phone call. People love to talk and especially enjoy it when you're interested in where they live. Nothing like real local knowledge.
I hope you're better now and luckily not stuck out there in the mud.
All the best
Viv

Hi Vivien
What did we do before HF radios?''''before my time
What did we do before mobile phones?
What did we do before Sat Phones?
What did we do before the Internet?
Now that I have Broadband...............................!!!
ExplorOz is agreat 'old fogies' place to while away the hours.
I don't mind giving advice however misguided it might be at times....LOL
I don't mind the odd wind-up.
There are lots of
forum dislikes but not worth mentioning...lol
It is a great time waster but you are never to old to learn something from this wonderful
forum on ExplorOz
I have made some great new friends through ExplorOz
What did I do before ExplorOz??.....I travelled a fair whack of Australia!!!
Cheers

Willem,
Well, I'm an old fogey too!!
I love exploroz and it's definitely given me lots of new
places that I want to visit and information on all sorts of travel related things. I "waste time"( but I prefer to think of it as "research") all the time. People that I don't even know become characters that I feel like I know
well.
It's a great community spirit.
Before exploroz we did as much travelling as we could, although not as much as we would have liked. I used to always long for information that was not available through regular channels which is why I used to phone the local area. Now I can ask the question here and there will always be someone who has been there and knows something useful.
All the best
Viv

Hi Viv,
I used to watch more tv but also used to spend more time on creative pursuits (although I think that the kids may have something to do with that ;-)) ).
In terms of a source of info,
well, pre-EO was also pre-kids; we used to just grab some maps and head of on an adventure.... free spirits, wherever the wind blows, wind and tide wait for no man (or woman), etc. EO and the internet in general have been a great source of info for all the up-grades in camping gear and vehicle add-ons that I now know I need but can't afford LOL

B'ware,
It's true that the kids can change your life...and we wouldn't change that I know. The "free spirits" don't disappear though and just wait, when the kids grow up and are off doing their own thing....back come those adventurous and spur of the moment people we once were!! The only difference is that we don't move as quickly, have a few more
grey hairs and wrinkles!! The spirit is still there!
All the best
Viv

After a bit more thought I realise that the research we can now do is what makes travelling with the kids easy. For instance we can decide roughly where we may want to pull up at night and and research our stop-over options whether it be on the roadside or a 5 star resort and therefore stop at the time that suits us for getting the kids sorted and get a good night's rest = less dramas.
Hmm, this is giving me itchy feet :-))
Regards,
Brian

I am always happy when I see
young families travelling around. We always felt like travelling together was the best experience. A lot of my friends would say that they were going to wait until the kids left
home before they started travelling. I wondered why they wouldn't want to be there when the kids saw Uluru, or snorkelled on the Great Barrier Reef, camped out under the stars etc etc... It's a great time for family bonding...where mum and dad are mates as
well as parents and there's that feeling of "we're a team".
Never lose those itchy feet!!

what did we do before exploroz?....made a decision on buying 4x4 related gear on gut feel (now I have to consider what 100 other people believe is the correct brand/type etc) ;)
