Ok, I am searching for an NL Pajero and all the ones I find in good condition are automatic.
I am toying with the idea of changing it to a manual, if I can get the car for the right price. I am thinking that I should be able to do a deal on most of the gear as an exchange. Has anyone done this? And is the computer different in the manual?

yes, lots of headaches ahead for you. pedal sets, master and slave cylinders, cross members tailshafts, gear ratio, final drive in auto not the same as manual. not sure about pajero but holes in firewall for clutch master cylinder may not be there. wait till you get a manual, or learn to like the sludge box, or look for another brand.

What is wrong with an Automatic???

Unless you are into serious rock crawling, the auto will get you out of most situations. Travelling on sand, the auto is the best, most responsive and practical transmission you could ask for.

Not worth the time or effort unless you get the vehicle for $SFA.
Too much hassle and besides the auto is generally better offroad with the possible exception of steep downhill tracks and dunes.

Once you get used to driving an auto, you'll wonder why you didn't change over much sooner.

Cheers

Auto, the only way to go in water !

Hey, Disco, can you explain a little your comment about dunes, I reckon they are great in dunes.

If ya budget can stretch to an NM model you'll get the best auto ever put in a 4B. All the comfort of an auto with the option to use it in manual mode too.

No way I'd try to convert an NL auto to manual.

Buy your auto Pajero and then do the transfer gear change, it will give you better engine braking than the manual and be much cheaper then you still have all the benefit of auto in sand and uphill ect ect.

LOW RANGE GEARS they do make a HUGE difference.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

Off-road ability was not the reason for the manual, I just prefer them on the road over the auto. I had a '93 Auto and liked it for off-road work.

I had a simplistic view of the changes needed for the swap, I counted on cross members, ECU etc, but not master cylinders etc so it will be out of the question.

I notice the auto is actually rated more economical than the manual anyway.

Oh, and the low ratio gears are not available for the 3.5 yet.
