For computer buffs - the new Ubuntu operating system 7.04 - Fiesty Fawn has been released (April 2007), and works very well - My install is the 64 bit version running on AMD3500+
As you know, the latest versions have been touted as - Ubuntu - Linux for Human Beings!
To date they lacked some vital components, (eg GUI for printer installs), however this release looks to include most things, and work well.

The GOOD:
The install itself from the ISO went perfectly. Ubuntu auto detected the scanner, the camera, the DVD /CD burner, NICs, internet, mouse, keyboard, soundcard etc.

I installed WINE (which allows many MS Windows apps to run). I did need the terminal to install it, but just cut and paste from a web site. Java is in.

Naturally it comes with Open office, Firefox, and Evolution (email, calander, diary etc), and all working perfectly. All bookmarks copied from my XP install; Made folders for mydocs, mymusic; mypics (Yes - still an umbilical cord to windows) and copied my files from NTFS.
**A NEW Development - Ubuntu can now read AND write to NTFS.
It detected the printer (Kyocera FS1900) but their 'driver' didn't work - fortunately Kyocera support Linux with drivers on the printer CD.

The Bad:

My Motherboard has an onboard VIA graphics chipset - and VIA do not support Linux.
So - Graphics are basic (and I cannot play BZFlag - now that is SERIOUS).
I couldn't get my mapping prog - Oziexplorer to run. Using WINE, it installs easily, but cannot write to the disk. The WINE site shows some unix/linux variants that it with works 'out of the box' - platinum, and one user did get it working on the last Ubuntu version. Even following their directions I had no Joy. This is the one app I really NEED to work - (along with bzflag)!!

So - I now play Soduko, Spider Solitair and MShearts on Linux.
Up yours Bill Gates..........................................Keith.

I also have an AMD3500+ venice , but I find better performance if I run 32 bit 7.04 - Fiesty Fawn , I tried 64 bit , but there were too many hassles with it . With your graphics , if you have an AGP slot you may be able to get a ATI Radeon card at the right price and then you will get your 3D working :)

I don't know why people insist on complicating their lives more than necessary:-)

I used to be a Computer Geek. Now I'm just one of Microsoft's followers, but not of fashion.

I have no problems at all with Windows XP, but will not "touch" Vista until I have to.
As for Linux.......Enjoy the "alternative lifestyle" if that is your bent:-)

Although I am an IT Professional, away from work, I just want to be a "User".

I agree. I too make my living as an IT Consultant. For me, Windows has enabled a very satisfactory living. Never made a cent from Linux.

Sounds like not much progress here - Nearly as good as windows, but won't run what I need. Doesn't support a basic Graphics chip, oh dear......

On behalf of Bill Gates, who by the way gives away more money to the needy than Australia, Up yours Keith_A.

Maybe Keith should try a Mac - They won't run hundreds of programs people use either.

Loading Ubuntu and then only playing games sounds insane to me, Linux is not the platform for games - get an X-Box or similar.

Rant over. I'm enjoying Vista and IE7.

You know sandman I reckon you're right, xp works so damn well why would you want to run linux and the associated problems. I know linux requires less fire power but computer are cheap these days. MS and Bill Gates, well they both rock.

hehe, just facing facts I think Mike. I've mucked around with computers for years but I've had enough of it. These days I'd rather use the computer than the other way around, right now I'm kicking back under the pergola with the wireless lappy, I'm enjoying a few beers with the footy and a roast chicken dinner in the bbq, used to be I'd be bum up head down sorting out some damn computer all weekend. 4 networked MS computers all running xp very nicely thank you.

True- I have actually discontinued installing any O/s other than Vista for home users.

Problem being an XP install from scratch (using XP SP2 source) takes around 3 hours by the time you add all software updates, Antivirus/antispyware, etc and get it to the point where Apps can be installed. I can't be bothered with that anymore.

Vista installs in about 12 minutes from scratch.

That's bearable :)

Haha, you're a diehard Microsoft hater Mike.

I didn't say it was rubbish, I merely pointed out that I won't waste my time installing it for people because it now takes too long. Once installed, it provides users with a stable, versatile system with thousands of available applications. There is nothing else available, free or to buy, that will ever match it. Other than Vista, which will assume the role.

I also don't install Ubuntu for people, as I have over the years wasted enough time installing the (Linux) O/S that never quite delivers - it's always been miles behind any Microsoft O/S and will never bridge the gap. After installation of the O/S, the computer has to be able to provide something of value to the user - eg, run Quickbooks, MYOB, or OziExplorer. A web browser and a game don't cut it, except for geeks who hate Bill because they can't hope to emulate him.

I don't install MacOS or OS/2 or Win98 or WinME or W2k or CP/M or any other of yesteryears software either. Doesn't mean they were no good in their time, just means they are a waste of time now.

:)

>Haha, you're a diehard Microsoft hater Mike.

Not at all Gerhardp1. This is the mistake you Microsoft Certified Professionals (what else does MCP stand for, I wonder? :)

I have spent 30+ years writing software and I don't give a toss which operating system it runs on (most of my software is embedded so it runs on _my_ OS anyway) but you would (should) have to admit that after 25+ years and zillions of dollars of Windows development... they could have done much better...?

Mike Harding

PS. I don't make any cash from support of any operating system... so consider I'm fairly impartial here.
