Having just completed a trip through the centre & west I offer the following on road
conditions encountered during April which may be of some use to those heading in
similar directions..
1. Oonadatta Track..good gravel road for most part, some care required with washouts. No problem with on road caravans or trailers. 2wd ok but extra
clearance is useful.
2. Tanami Road..generally very good, some short corrugated sections in NT.
Last 50k in WA before
Halls Creek can only be described as rough. I dont
recomend travel with standard caravan/trailer or 2wd, but it would be possible.
3
Spring Creek Track, access to Bungles..50 km, took 2.5 hrs. Slow, winding,
rough, with numerous wash outs, steep creek crossings. Dont risk your on road
C/t. Caravans of any description are banned. Off road trailers ok. Some soft
road 4wd may have clearance problems.
4.
Fitzroy Crossing to
Gibb River Road.. just opened, rough & slow, ok for offroad
van or C/t. 4wd only for clearance reasons.
5.
Gibb River Road..still closed then, open now.
6.
Mereenie Loop Road.. rough & corrugated sections, 2wd difficult but not
impossible.
7.
Palm Valley access.. pretty good really, soft roaders in there no problem.
General observations..very few tourist bus operaters encountered, a bit early in
the season perhaps, but most were very polite, slowing down & causing no problems. Same cannot be said of the Britz Brigade, all going like bats out of hell,
up the middle of the road usually, & in big numbers, will overtake anywhere as
well. Seriously, beware of these idiots & give them a wide berth. ...oldbaz.
