Howdy all, just got in last night from 2 weeks away. Had a blast! Attended the 4WD Qld Country Meeting at the Corroboree held at Finch Hatton via Mackay on the May Day weekend, drove some beautiful tracks in the Crediton Forest, The Eungella Range and the Denham Range, 3 days in Airlie Beach where it rained almost constantly, battled 2-3 metre seas to swim on the reef 30 miles out to sea on the Cruise Whitsundays day trip, drove out to Winton in west Qld and then the corrugated Jundah Rd to Lark Quarry where the Dinosaur Trackways are, visited the Matilda Centre, met bush poet Milton Taylor and was enthralled with his yarns, visited the QANTAS museum and Stockmans Hall of Fame at Longreach, paid for a new battery and alternator rebuild in Longreach, drove through many more towns that had much to offer, but sadly we hadn't enough time so have decided that the next trip we will be backtracking up the roads we just came home on and spending more time at each town.

FREE PLUGS!!!!

We stayed mostly at caravan parks but also a couple of free sites...

Macrossan Park, 22 k's east of Charters Towers, on the banks of the Burdekin River
Morven Rec Grounds, turn off the main highway as you go through Morven, excellent amenities

Caravan Parks...
Andergrove Caravan Park in Mackay, excellent park!
Matilda C/P in Winton, excellent park
Gunnadoo C/P in Longreach

Also Lake Monduran near Gin Gin, a beautiful place to camp.

And also a FREE PLUG to O'Brien's Garage in Longreach, I arrived after 4pm Monday with electrical problems and they tried their best to sort it out on the spot. With a faulty alternator being the culprit, obviously I had to return. They got me in first up Tuesday, the auto sparky that did the job even getting to work 1/2 hr early to try to get us going that little bit quicker. Great service and a great bunch of guys!!
Many thanks!!!

Hi Brian,

Was it at Gunnadoo that you met the bush poet? We stayed there back in 1999 and met a bush poet who came to the CV Park to entertain the guests. His name was Mark Kleinschmidt and we had a wonderful night listening to his fascinating poetry.

We actually bought his cassette (An old fashioned means of recording and playing back audio entertainment in the car.) and book. My youngest daughter has performed some of his work at eistedfods and school competitions over the years since. They have all been extremely well received.

That night was one of many highlights on our Cape York trip.

Hi Duncs,
No we met Milton Taylor at the Matilda C/P in Winton. I bought one of his CD's and the kids have asked for it to be played twice a day every day since!! They had a fellow named Tom McIvor at Gunnadoo, but were charging admission for him and for various other reasons missed his shows while we were there. Milton also mentioned Mark Kleinschmidt and Marco Gliorio and a few others as well...

Milton was fabulous, can't remember when I have been so well entertained, he is a great character. He dragged me out of my chair as his "volunteer" to play Bill in his rendition of the "Man from Ironbark", and for days after, even in Longreach, people called out to me.... "Hi Bill from Ironbark"!!!! My little bit of fame!! LOL.....

;-))

Cheers
