Hi,
travelling up to Uluru, Kings Canyon and Alice next year...perhaps up to
Tennant Creek, how long should we spend in these areas to really see the sights. We are planning on taking 6-8 weeks for our trip. We are travelling with another family, and will have 3 children ages from 2-4 with us.
cheers Al

Al,
Depends what your interests are. I would say three days at Uluru, two days at Kings Canyon and at least a couple of weeks around the Alice.
There is a hell of a lt to see in Central Australia.
There are some good 4x4 journeys along the way to
Tennant Creek. Couyple of days in Tennant should suffice.
If you have not been to Alice and especially Tennant it may come as a culture shock to you. But you have to make up your own mind on that issue. Happy travels.Cheers, Willem

Al, if your rig is up to it, take the
Mereenie Loop from Kings Canyon. You wil be able to take in
Hermannsburg,
Palm valley and all the Gorges and other wonderful attractions through the West Macs. From
Alice Springs you can tour the East Macs, which are full of delights,
Rainbow Valley and
Chambers Pillar. Which of these you do, depends of course on the toughness if your outfit, and your experience as a 4WDer.
After travelling that way last year, We spent about 3 weeks in the
Alice Springs area, but couldn't recommend more than an hour in
Tennant Creek.
Happy
trails, Mike.
PS. While in Alice, we found that the Big 4
park at Heavytree Gap was magnificent. Very clean, secure and friendly.

Hi Mike,
when you say if our rig is up to it, what do you mean exactly. We are driving a landcruiser [80 series] towing a roadstar poptop van, with independent susp, and light truck tyres...we would like to travel that way, perhaps spending a few days at
Glen Helen...but having never travelled in the area before we are complete novices.

Al, some travellers try to take a normal car and caravan on these trips and while many manage with no problems, many others underestimate the severity of the conditions. Your outfit sounds like what is needed for this trip. Certainly, you would have no problem on any of these tracks with an 80 series. The
Mereenie loop can be extremely corrugated in parts, so tyres and suspensions need to be in good nick. If you intend to do
Palm valley, I would leave the caravan in
Hermannsburg, the van
park is quite safe evidendly. I would also not attempt to take the van to
Chambers Pillar.
Happy travelling, you are heading into some wonderful country.
Happy
trails, Mike.

You would have no trouble doing the
Mereenie loop with that rig.

Brad.
