Hi guys, what a fantastic site !!
I'm looking at going along the Strzelecki Track next year.
Wondering what time of the year would be the best, thinking Sept - Oct,
Would it be advisable to tow a camper van?
What are the best sites to see?
Thanks in advance

Regie,

The best time is between April and the end of October. The new Strzeleki Track is a modern gravel road and you may travel the speed limit or beyond if you wish in places and it is accessible by 2wd. The Old Strzeleki Track is quite interesting as it winds its way through the Oil fields. You could also do this track in 2wd. Depending on how robust your campervan is it should be OK to take it on either of the tracks. Just remember that beyond Innamincka and over the SA border in Queensland the roads are traditionally atrocious and there is about 170km of bone jarring gravel road before you get to the bitumen at the Jackson Oil Field.Cheers, Willem

Reggie, Must agree with Willem, many travellers take conventional vehicles and trailers/caravans up the Strez. It would be far safer though, with an off road rig. (Always take 2 spares for the truck and the trailer) The Strezlecki is a great trip whichever way you travel it and the destination at Cooper Creek is worth the trip. We've travelled the new and old tracks and both have much to offer, but as Willem said, the roads beyond are quite a deal harsher, as you cross into Qld either towards Jackson or through Cordillo Downs towards wonderful Birdsville.
As for best sites, take your time and see everything listed in the travel brochures, you won't be disappointed.
Good luck with your trip.

Happy trails, Mike.
