Hi everyone,

I'd love to go camping somewhere not too far out of the Perth CBD, with a bit of 4WD action to boot - Wedge seems like a good candiate, or maybe Narrowneck.

I have a few questions, however:

1) Where, if possible, can i find a detailed map of the area? The best the RAC has is the Jurien Bay ragion - not very specific and not done to a good scale.

2) My car is a 1992 Subaru Liberty GX Wagon 4WD. The adjustable suspension was replaced with 'normal' shockies before I bought it (shame, can really make clearance a problem). It has Bridgestone road tyres (some B'Style 185/75/14 road job). Any estimates on how I'll fair on this run? I'm after advice from people who has done this run before and know how rough it will get. (How do liberty's go on sand, full-stop? any tips for this type of vehicle?)

3) Is it legal (or easy to get away with) to camp out around Wedge Island area? I have heard conflicting stories form this website and word-of-mouth queries. Some say that around the Wedge area it's fine, as long as i'm well away form the bombing range, while the Gingin shire website forbids camping anywhere in the Gingin shire that is not a licenses caravan park or camping ground. Again, appealing for experience from people familiar with this territory as to what is kosher.

Any other suggestions for places that arn't that far out of perth that provides decent camping and light off-roading would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance, much appreicated.

Saw blokes driving an XD Falcon along the track to Wedge, so you won't have too many dramas. Most of the track from Lancelin to Wedge is hard packed sand or limestone.

You need to check with CALM about permits. When we camped there (2002) it was open slather. If the Gin Gin council has rules about camping why not contact them, why ask a forum?

You can't even transit through to Wedge if there is bombing as the track passes through the range. So if you can't get there then don't worry about getting your serenity disturbed.

Head north out of Lancelin into the sand hill area (through the gate/fence ) and keeping left, follow track north. First fork will be left to beach, (thats Narrow Neck if I remember correct)thats Narrow Neck if I remember correct). Keep right to Wedge. The track will take you up through the live ammo target area (they throw artillery shells at it)
and a sign will tell you if ok to pass through. Further along you get the option of keep left through some nice country down to and across sand dunes (firm) and to Wedge. If the weather has been wet they may have pushed the sign over to let you know dont go this way. Very swampy patch of ground down this track in the winter. So keep right and travel until you find yourself heading west along a fence line which will take you into Wedge. A right turn along the way continues to Grey (Green islets) though a lot of travellers get onto the beach at Wedge to get the first few miles of northing before turning inland where limestone outcrops prevent further north on beach.

The track contains a lot of limestone outcrop and restrict speed to dead slow a lot of the way. When I was a kid I went up to Cervantes two or three times along this track in 2wd. The hard bit then was the sand at Hill River between Cervantes and Jurien. I last went up to Cervantes this way a couple of years ago in the Hilux 4wd.

I never heard of camping restrictions but there is some national park that is always out of bounds anyway for that purpose. No signs anyways. People still live at Wedge and Grey. You dont get the numbers of campers like you do in Qld that require some regs to keep everything in order. A warning is the worst you could get but I doubt very much you would get hassled.

There is a uhf repeater at Jurien that covers a lot of the area dunno about cdma.

I think it is one our best kept 4wd trip secrets. They keep talking about putting the bitumen up through there so go before they do.

Bit of history up that way. It was the official and mapped stock route to Geraldton once. They used to leave from near Herdsman lake. A lot of kangaroo shooting went on for the hides that were in heavy demand from shoe industry. A cave from which was mined guano and the way for crayfishermen before they built the Brand Highway.

Natmaps has is pretty well plotted. If you dont have napmaps give me a call 0893412347 and I give you a printout. You must be in Perth so too easy.

Jeez I might even go with you!

Owen

FYI regarding the bitumen road- a large sum of money has been allocated from the state budget for this project. Work is due to commence next year, finishing in 2012.

I had heard on the grape vine that the residents of wedge had been given their marching orders. The only ones that will be able to remain are the pro fisherman.

Last time I went to Wedge (2006), we had a couple of Prado's and one mate in a Forrester. he got the forrester up to Wedge and out on the beach without any dramas. Though I'm sure he was more confident knowing that help from the Prado's was there should he get stuck. On the second day he got more adventureous and ventured off the main tracks and got it bogged a couple of times.
No permit is required to camp at Wedge.

Thankyou very much for your information, just what I was after.
I'm looking for some mates to take with me (ie. with 4WD's).
