Dorrigo is a fantastic place. The tracks in national parks are usually gated off but other tracks in state forest are available. But there is atrend to shut them down.

There is a forestry commission map called Coffs harbour 1:125000 which lists the roads etc.

Platypus Flat, Mobong Falls, road from Platypus Flat up to Clouds Creek is very interesting!

My favourtie place is Norman Jolly Memorial Grove which has a magnificient stand of Tallowood trees. Need to to be seen to be believed.

Bitumen road up to Dorrigo from Bellinger Valley is very scenic

There are no 4wd tracks at all within the Dorrigo National Park.

As stated in earlier reply, any 4wding around Dorrigo and Coffs Harbour is restricted to State Forests. Even the NP towards Armidale such as Guy Fawkes, New England/Nymbodia and Cheelundi have no 4wding. A lot of them border on Wilderness areas and as we all know, there is definitely no 4wding in them.

Have a look at the NPWS NSW web page for more info.

There are plenty of drives to take although not really 4WD - fair gravel roads. The road from Dorrigo to Glenreagh and Coramba via Ulong and Lowanna is a good drive, as is the road from Ebor through to Grafton. Also there are some spectacular waterfalls off the Waterfall Way going back towards Armidale - Wollomombi Fall, Ebor Falls, Hillgrove etc. Also Point Lookout for spectacular views down to the coast. Further north is the highway from Glen Innes to Grafton and the old highway between the same places. Then there is the Kempsey Road that heads SE from Wollomombi through some spectacular country. Also worth a look is the collection of old railway engine and carriages at north Dorrigo.

I am interested in the point lookout area. Have just bought a property that looks over the valley to point lookout and have been there a couple of times. On the Hema maps, it shows some very interesting looking tracks heading down from the escarpment into the valley. Anyone know about these, I want to point my nose down them but am worried there will be a locked gate halfway down.
There is a track that goes from near Raspberry Rd at Wooloombi through the rivers in the valley and up onto the escarpment, onto Youdales hut and out at Wlcha. I believe you can contact nat parks at Armidale or Wlacha to organise a key for the locked gate. Mind you, -4 degrees last night.

Big Mike,

From memory, the area you are talking about in the valleys is part of the Oxley Wild Rivers Wilderness area (would have to dig out the maps to clarify that), and if thats correct there would be no chance of getting in there thanks to the bollard and gate system they use.

I know for a fact that there is only 1 legal way in and out of Youdales Hut, and that is by paying $35 per vehicle per day for key access from NPWS and there is a limit of 6 vehicles per day allowed in there. All other roads in and out of Youdales are locked by NPWS gate system.
