Hey Trckster, depends on how far down the Border Track you are going.

Sunset has area's both sides of the Sturt Highway. North you have the Murray River or in places whats left of it. South you have various tracks, and sites such as Rocket Lake, Sunset Crater, Ochre Pit, Shearer Quaters and Camp area. Further South you can have a look at the Pink Lakes and the Rock Holes. If you are heading further south, you get the best part of the Border Track, this is from Pinnaroo down through Ngarkat and if you want to do a 10klm detour we will be just east of the Ngarkat in Big Desert, Des Lexic may be there even though that may put you off visiting LOL

Blaze, you need some glasses. Trucky has plans for the Nov. longweekend not the June one. Not sure when the fire season starts but I think it is in Oct. some time and the Border Track is usually closed off from then on till April/May.

Blaze, you keep digging a hole for yourself. The Longweekend trucky refers to is the Melbourne Cup holiday on the first Tuesday in November. A lot of Mexicans take the Monday as well so that they can spend more time out of the state that they are in.

Blaze,

We'll be there from the Sat to Tues - group of three cars. Plan to camp at Big Billy Sun night then head down the border track and camp Red Bluff on Monday. I'll keep a watch out for you - and Des in particular.

Cheers

2/ Hey Des I'm not digging any Hole, its not a holiday in 90% of Australia and anyway, What is a Melbourne Cup? Is that a Trophy just for Victoria now that they can't get a team to win the AFL Premiership Cup..... LOL

Hey 2 groups don't make a crowd! Too cold for most I hope. We're going for CSR practice - only 6.5 weeks to go!

Hi Peter,

Yep Thomsons Peak is directly below Red Gums, and I guess you knoe Blue and Yellow Gums are East and Nth East of Red Gums. We will be at either camped down there from Friday night onward, Des I believe is heading back to berri on Sunday as he has his SWMBO back at work on Monday (bloody slave driver)

As mentioned we will be at one of the Gums camps for the whole weekend, have one couple bringing a Van with them so I have to refresh my memory about which camp they could get into, if none of these we will probably go to Big Billy as this is an easy track down.

I think Ngarkat closes around time of fire restriction season (start mid Oct). You might want to check with SA National Parks.

Pertendi hut and Red Bluff are very good camp spots. 4wdriving in Vic side of border around Cactus Bore (Big Desert) has some good challenges. Red Gum Swamp a real oasis in that area.

Truckster, theres a nice challenging hill (or two) just off Cactus Bore Tk called Thompsons lookout. Can take a bit of effort, also further north of Brushcutters track is another very big dune, I'll check out the name and co-ords after work.

Nothing like planning ahead !! Ray (Mad Dog) took us to a lake that we camped near, very nice spot. We camped there on the way back so it was not too far to scoot home. I will get the maps out and find out where it was. Think I have the track log as well.

Truckster - look out for the BIG hole on the southern section of the Border Track (from memory just South of the Red Bluff track.

We lost a Rangie down there on our first trip down the Border Track. This certainly instilled a dose of common sense for future ventures... well a little bit anyway!

Not sure if it's still there though...

Truckster with 4 days there is time to do a loop from the Wonga Campground, Eastern lookout, Eagle track up to Pine Plains & the Snow drift. Wirrengren Plain to Underbool & the Pink Lakes. Back accross the Mallee Highway to White Springs, Big K lookout & Big Billy Bore. Accross to Cactus Bore, Red Gums & the Firebreak track to Scorpion Springs. The Border track at this point has be closed on this weekend before (God bless the SA Parks) so the only option then is around on the SA side. Red Bluff, Southern Firebreak track, Chinaman well track to Lake Albacutya then it's time to go home.
I found the Wyperfeld Park far more interesting than most of the Sunset Country.
Pray for rain on the Murrayville road, you'll have a ball ;-)
Cheers Craig.............
