I have heard about a road /track that runs through the middle of OZ east-west. Does anyone know details about this...suggestion was it was a mining road, unsealed but quite good. My query is about a short way to get from Qld to Exmouth in WA.

From Alice Springs you drive out to Pupunya Communitiy and then keep on going west along the Gary Junction Road as far as Kunawarritji Community. Then take the Wapet/ Punmu/Telfer/Rippon Hills/Marble Bar Road and come out near Port Hedland.

Getting to Alice Springs the shortest route from say Rockhampton, will be via Winton, Boulia and the Plenty Highway.

Cheers

Geoff

From Alice Springs the roads are quite good. The first 136km is bitumen. Thereafter the road is gravel and 80kmh is a safe speed to travel at. Best thing is to drive to road conditions. There will be some corrugations. The bitumen starts again when you join the Rippon Hills Road although there are some stretches of the Telfer Road which is bitumenised.

You will need two Transit Permits through Aboriginal lands. One from the Central Land Council and the other from the Ngaanyatjarra Council. Both councils have offices in Alice Springs. Fuel along the way is available at Pupunya, Kintore, Kiwirrkurra, Kunawarritji and Marble Bar...all of these places may be around the $2 plus per litre mark.

Cheers

Willem thanks heaps...appreciate your input.
I would like to plot your track descriptions on a map to get an overall impression. If there is anyone out there who has already done this or can point me in the right direction to find it somehwere that would be great.
Davoe I have not heard of the outback highway and am yet to see where abouts Laverton in WA is. I would be coming from cairns and I did of course know where Longreach is.
cheers and thanks again...Geoff

There are two major tracks being talked of here AFAIK. The Great Central and the Gary Junction Road.
The GJR is the one you want. For some impressions of this road , check out the first few pix at The first few pix here home.iprimus.com.au/jimshire/pix.html
NB You won't take the Kidson Track when you get to Well33.

Hi Maysey

did it last year - great road thought it was in very good condition - quite a few washouts though - fuel as willem describes - no problems - just a little bit remote - you will be on your own for a while - one oncoming vehicle - be prepared or be prepared for a big recovery bill

Hope this helps

Hello Maysey,

We did the Gary Junction Road last year as well and thoroughly enjoyed it. The road was no problems, just keep an eye out for wash outs (and camels)! We took four days to get from Redbank Gorge in the West McDonnell's to Marble Bar.

Thanks Smort for the info you gave us before we left.

Best wishes
