I am just in the very early stages of considering a second-hand Landcruiser 100 series 4.2 turbo diesel (GXL) , probably auto, as manual are a bit like hen's teeth (I do prefer manual).

I'm looking around about 2004 vintage (give or take) and would love to hear positives/ negatives, things to look out for, expected fuel consumption while towing a van, etc. from anyone who owns one. We pretty much only use it as a tow vehicle (about 2.8 tonnes van), it sits in the garage at other times.
Any and all info much appreciated.
regards and thanks

Some food for thought:
I towed my boat from PERTH to KARRATHA behind an 07 LC diesel manual, only 30k on the clock
The boat is a 5.5m ally, total weight around 1.5 tonnes with trailer.
MAXIMUM speed was 100kmph, foot flat, down a hill, with a tail wind in 4th.
So we sat on aroun 85-90kmph, in 4th for the 1500km journey.
Fuel consumption was a steady 25-30 litres per 100km.

On the other hand i tow it around with my patrol (check rig profile for specs)
and sit on 100-110kmph easy in 5th, and can overtake, and only use 18-22litres per 100km.

Not to say the LC is a bad vehicle, just my one and only experience with one.
Would have hated to see how bad it was with 2.8t behind it, i dont think i would have got out of 3rd.

Hope this is of some consideration to ya mate, but only my experince, hope it helps.
Cheers
Wayne-o

Thanks- interesting.
Scary, (talk about gutless) guess that was normally aspirated but even my 4.2 Patrol was better than that before the turbo went on. Now it's brilliant! Less than 15litres/100k towing my van.
My '90 Patrol is perfect, low mileage (though "elderly") and would go to my son.
I just thinking of updating to airbags, abs etc
I've also been looking for a good GU 4.2, at the right price, but rare!
Thanks

Hey Wayne-o

There must have been something wrong with it.

My old man has a TD RV ute and it pulls his 23 foot off road van easy, in fact he likes to sit on 90 kph but finds hard to sit under 110.

I towed my mates 5 meter Quintrex at 120 kph the other day, with my 100 series non turbo with 290,000 kms on the clock so to me there not gutless at all, not even the non turbos.

The National speed limit is 110 with the exception of the NT, when you tow something it is a max of 100, so I don't understand why all the hype about power, because towing anything over 100 kph is illegal in every state other than the NT.

Steve.

agree,
with TD you are fine.
With NA I BELIEVE there are better vehicles, and no there was nothing wrong with it, and if there was, doesnt say much for a brand new tojo, fu_ked after 30k??????
and remember, i actually like landcruisers!!!! so i was very disappointed.
(my first time driving an NA cruiser)

A turbo diesel and an automatic trans are a match made in heaven. The torque converter allows the turbo to spin up to virtually eliminate any turbo lag. I have a 2003 GXL T\D 5 sd auto and it is far and away the best Toyota I have ever driven. Dont overlook the autos specially if towing as they area far better all round proposition than the manual, no clutch to wear and the torque converter allows the engine and turbo to apply apropriate torque before moving off. I have never used my vehcle to tow anything but with the level of power and torque available I know it would not be an issue. They are also quite fuel effcient as touring vehicles, mine regularly averages 12lts per 100k or 7.5k to litre, it is well run in tho ;-)
An auto cruising at 100klm is doing 400 revs less than a manual due to higher gearing. BTW my vehicle has just come off lease and is for sale if you or anyone is interested 0402 329 372 for further info. Cheers Rob

David,

I tow my 18 ft fibreglass boat (read heavy) on a tandem trailer with a non turbo 100 series. It will happily cruise at 100 and will easily and willingly get up to 120 if I am am not watching. Consumption is about 15 l/100kms towing this rig.
