Most probably been done to death in the past but can I please have pros and cons of the centre pole canvas tents. Ranger Camping here in Perth currently have a 20% off everything sale and the OzTent centre pole tent looks good and is very reasonably priced. Yer I know they are heavy and reasonably bulky.

Any advice either way would be appreciated.

Thanks

Once watered down properly they are marvellous,

I have the Freedom Family tourer and would not part with it. I have a mate that has the Oz Tent version of the same size and he can not fault it.

Although they are heavy they a well worth the money and the extra weight.

Have a look at getting the conversion kit to remove the centre pole if you want extra internal room.

In mine I can fit the double swag plus 2 single swags.

Cheers Kev

Centre Pole

Pro's: Get the misses to do some Pole dancing, saves paying for it !
Con's: Always in the way, pain in the ass..

Not bulky at all, folds up flat so usually goes on the floor first and pack stuff on top or pack it sideways !

Side Poles

Yep buy them and enjoy putting it up in five minutes and enjoy the room !

cheers

I found that whilst the centre pole has a nice wide rubber base, the side poles didn't and it looked like it was putting quite a load on a confined area of the floor.

Nothing a couple of chunks of scrap rubber to spread the load didn't fix though.

"Not bulky at all, folds up flat so usually goes on the floor first and pack stuff on top or pack it sideways"

This would be a real prob IMO if all other gear has to be packed on top of tent. Tent is almost always the first thing to be put up and last to go in when I go camping. I have bad memories of my youth with a centre pole tent. Being the boy, I got the side of the tent and almost always got left with no room. 2 adults and 2 kids, 8x8 tent. 2 single airbeds just didn't fit in half the tent. No recent experience with them though so maybe they are a bit bigger now???

Cheers, Trevor.

Thanks Steve, I want it for a 14 day desert trip I'm planning on doing next year. Currently we have an OzTrail dome tent which whist an excellent tent is a pain to put up and down each day. Basically it takes 30 min to put up and 40 min to pack up.
BTW do you still use a ground tarp under? The floor appeared to be a thicker material than that used for the nylon dome tents.
Now got to convince the wife that we MUST have the new tent.

Yes use a ground sheet, get one slightly longer than the tent so that you don't walk dirt and crap into the tent with you.

Use the squares already they are great. Have 5 of them and the odd one I use when having a shower to stand on. Cheap as chips and pack up small.

Go the centre pole. Help you get off the mattress in the night and handy for hanging gear off, like the light or clothes hangers.

Hey Duncan, we have had a COI centre pole very similar to the oz tent. Very quick to put up with just the centre pole. Afte a while I thought I would buy the side pole kit and only used it once. Biggest pain in the arse. Oztents may have better system though. recommend try with centre pole only

Cheers Jim

I've heard oft he conversion kits but I think the centre pole will have advantages. Gives you something to grab hold of when your staggering half a sleep in th emiddle of the night. Also the wife can kick that instead of me when I start to snore.

Duncan

I have a COI centre pole extension canvas tent and it is great. Extremely easy to erect.

Downside is the size of the thing when folded. Had a dome tent before and there is no comparison.

Oztent centre pole????

I don't believe Oztent have such a product.

The Oztent concept is based on an internal hinged aluminium frame.

Oz Tent, or Oztrail he may have mistakenly spelt it.

Your right Sand Man I did make a mistake should of said OzTrail. No way I can justify spending the amount of money that OzTent want for their tents.

Hi all....just my two cents. I bought a centre pole last year for the young ones. Now we got one that they call a tourer( spelling ) from BIG W and its the ducks n*ts. Really very good and at only $170 honestly its great for the money why anyone would spend big bucks I dont know because this is very good. Last time I looked they were still selling them KMART do aswell so perhaps you should look at them they are canvas as well.
