Hi pplz,

Does anyone know if the barge from inskip point to fraser is still $20?
I have only been once about a year ago and it was around $70-80 from memory but I just read the ExplorOz guide or whatever it is (for fraser Is.) and it said that there was new competition with the new guy charging $20 return, but it is dated (at the top of the page) some time in 2005... Is this recent information (i.e. 2007) or was this in 2005 with the new guy already gone bust...

Cheers
Rich

P.s. Also, somewhere else in that guide it gives fuel estimates. it says 104 litres for a 4cyl diesel, 73 litres for a 6cyl diesel, and 142 litres for 6cyl petrol. Surely this is a mistake ? (most likely the one for 6cyl diesel)

Also with regard to fuel capacities, has anyone been to Cape York in a standard 80 Series diesel landcruiser with factory sub tank (what's that, about 140L total?) and if so, how many jerries was it necessary to take, i.e. how many litres capacity would be minimum advisable...?

I went in a Jackaroo with 85 litres and didn't need the Jerry cans at all.

With 140 litres in two tanks, you will only have trouble if you rupture both tanks.....

Rich,

Looking at the Manta Ray Web site, the cost is $55 one way, or $80 return. I'm sure the opposition would be about the same.

There was a "war" between the local operator and the Resort operators which drove the price down for a while, but as nobody could continue to operate at a negative mergin, the prices have stablized.

That's my understanding anyway.

The Manta Ray barge is an Advertiser on this site and should be worthy of that "extra" consideration.

"mergin"......Did I invent a new word?

This is actually Sand Man talk for "margin", as in negative profit margin.

That's probably a good word - when one company goes broke due to negative margins, they end up mergin with another company :)

The prices are no longer $20! And the Manta Ray is the independant barge, IMO worthy of support.
The fuel "estimate" will depend on where you go..... the more driving , the more fuel. It's a big place, and there are fuel stops..... one at Eurong and one at Orchid Beach, but the prices are inflated greatly!

Yes, been to the Cape a few times in a diesel 80. I carry two extra jerries, but have never needed them, as fuel availibility was never a problem. Just top up whenever you come to an outlet and you'll be right.

A diesel 80 with 145L of fuel will have a range of about 1000k useable depending on driving... You could assume that you use about 13L/100k normal driving so lets say that goes up to 15L/100K with a load etc..... That works out to be 966klm from full to bone dry..... You will be able to do your trip easily with that sort of range... jerry cans will be a bit of a safety margin though...

When I did it in my 80 with the CT fully loaded at worst I was using 17l/100k (but that was on the highway and the figures were more like the 14L mark off roading as the car was not working anywhere near as hard. I brought a single jerry can full of diesel and it wasn't until I got back home and was going driving again that I actually put the fuel in the cars tank...

Better to use the space for more water IMO.

I was up there for the Fishing expo a couple of weeks ago. Both barges were $80, it cost us $135 with a trailer.

Fuel at Orchid beach was $1.78 during the comp for both unleaded & diesel. We actually got up there a few days earlier and it was $1.75 at that point. I filled up the Navara at Rainbow & after the run up the beach it took a fraction under a full jerry can (prob 19.25ltrs) to fill me up again. Towing a heavy boat would be worse no doubt.

How much fuel you use on fraser is really dependent on load and the beach & track condition. With the rain SE Qld has had in the last few days, it would be great. Its also important to pick your tides, make sure you are hitting the beach an hour or 2 either side of low to give yourself the best run up the beach.

Cheers

Thanks for the info :)

With regard to the fuel litres, I wasn't really worried about how much it was actually, I was merely pointing out that their figures surely must be wrong .. a six cylinder using so much less than a four cylinder??
