Well about to do a CD up for my trip and was wondering what others like to listen to.

At this stage I'm about to load some Jethro Tull, Cars, Cold Chisel, Eric Clapton, Paul Kelly, Didge, ZZ Top, Dire Straits, Joe Cocker, Tracy Chapman to start with.

Not that i'll be playing it while stopped rather listen to the bush :)

Where to from here :).

I'm not being smart ,but most off highway we do you can't play cds because of the bumps. I like good old John Farnham, Dooby Brothers,A bit of GOOD country. It seems to suit out there. Have you thought of things like Len Beadall on cd or talking books? We are going to try a couple for our next Simpson trip for the highway part. Chris.

Hi Chris and others,
we like little bit of country music for travel on the bitumen too. A couple of good ones are by Jim Haynes and I personally love CD's from Sara Storer.
But everybody have different taste, I except that.

The trouble with those 2 types of music is you need two heads to listen to it.

Because CD's do not work well on corrigations, we use an I Pod played back via the FM radio. Works a treat regadless of the road conditions or the music selected.

Would I be right in saying the iPod has a small hard drive in it, something that is turning,
I bought a JVC Car Radio with a USB port on the front, I only use 1GB Flash drives , I know there are larger ones as the photo below is an 8GB but a 1GB allows 300 songs, I have 4 of them , that will be enough music to last from Perth to Brisbane, The flash drive is direct into the radio, no transmitted FM signals , no moving parts, and if I need more music after that the Garmin Nuvi 660 has another 287 songs on it's SD card,

Yes gave CD's the flick just use a couple of USB drives plugged into the FM converter which is picked up by the Stereo, 4Gb of MP3's lasts for awhole extended trip without repeats.

Another vote for the USB memory sticks and the FM transmitter.
Buy the USB from anywhere, and the FM transmitter they plug into, from Jaycar or Dick Smith.
One stick for Jazz; one for Classics; one for ....etc
To select the type of music - just plug in the stick.
Clear stereo regardless of corrugations
With a 12V socket in the camper/Van, just take from the car and plug it in.

Try Chad Morgan - a great outback Aussie entertainer.

I laugh my guts out everytime I hear him, as well as get emotional for a childhood in the Pilbara and Kimberlies when Slim Dusty was King and the bitumen finished at Northhampton.

Good point about the Ipod ....... but don't have one (shame) so its CD's or a local radio channel if I can pick one up, if not well just have to manage without.

But do like the idea of an Ipod what they worth. I dare say Dick Smith would have them. More techie thingie's geezzzzzzzzz i'll be landing my vehicle soon not driving it lol.

Replace the CD player in the car with a MP/CD player. Put all your Cds plus downloads etc on MP 3's. We took about 20 MP3s to Wa and we didnt even listen to all of them on the drive. Mps stores heap of music and they dont skip.

Brian H,
Gave away the CD's as too much trouble on the road. Purchased an FM modulator thingie, 2gig ipod, 3 x 256 sticks and a 256 MP3 player. The FM thingie plugs into the ciggy lighter and everything else runs through that via cord and USB connection. All nice and small and holds piles of music.
Cheers,
Bros.
PS. Then there's Status Quo, Steppenwolf, Technotronic, Whitesnake, Tone Loc, Santana etc etc.

That's what I'm saying about iPods, bloody Cig adaptors, wires, lose iPod laying on the dash, the Flash Drive direct connection to the radio is the no doubt the best that I know , NO moving parts and the reproduction is perfect.
I do notice that Supercheap has some good brands on sale. The JVC unit I have is made in JAPAN not China

iPods are over-rated. Their new product is much better. Apple Computer has developed a computer chip that can store and play music in women's breast implants. The iBreast will cost $499 or $599 depending on size.

This is considered to be a major breakthrough because women are always complaining about men staring at their breasts and not listening to them.

"where to from here"

Don't turn into a Doof Doof Brian. Give music a miss - listen to ABC Radio 891 or Radio National 729 - and learn all about the weather; find out the latest with the farmers....whats the price of fat lambs.......can even listen to "talk back gardening" or Macca on a Sunday morning.........

OK, back into my shell....................

Brian, I was a little bit tongue in cheek :-)) To be honest, I'm a bit amused that we head off into the bush, "to escape the city" and bring all that the city music with us. I'm guilty of it too - usually have something playing in the background while cruising the bitumen, but once off the bitumen, its different.

I'll admit to hating campers nearby blasting their music into the night out in the bush.

Good old ABC. Friends of ours drove out to Katherine, (700 k's of dirt track) They had just got out of town when dad put a cd in and nothing happened. A bit of surgery by Mum found someone had used the CD slot as a money box.
So they weren't happy driving for 9 1/2 half hours listening to the racing channel. (all we can get most of the way.)
Mmmmmmmm, now where do we go next?

Most of the ones you have mentioned plus a lot more. You forgot The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Van Morrison, Elton John, Enigma, The Doors, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Evanescence, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springstein, Bob Seger, Sarah McLachlan and the Pigram Brothers. To keep the wife happy Enya and Andre Bocelli.

Don't use CDs though. Have a 20 gig MP3 player and an FM transmitter. Plays thousands of songs. If you are driving long distances it is the best way to go.

Love the Pigram Brothers. Saltwater Cowboy always reminds me of a "Save The Fitzroy River" night at the Open Air Picture Theatre in Broome. The Pigram Bros played,as well as a band called Fitzroy Crossing, Bamba, and lots more. It was a great night and a funny memory is of people yelling out for "Eagle Rock" to every band that came on!!

I've got Jir and Under the Mango Tree too.

Music for trip...well we bought a Ted Egan tape on our first travels to the NT and it became our trip music when the kids were little. The Goanna Drover, The Drover's Boy, Matt Savage, the Boss Drover etc. We now have Ted Egan's - The Overlanders with poems and music. I love the ones on The Canning Stock Route and Ben Hartigan.

By "Bamba" do you mean Stephen Albert. If so I have met him and he is a very talented man.

He starred in "Bran Nu Dae" and "Corregation Road"- I saw "Bran Nu Dae" and really enjoyed it. I have the original cast recording. It is again music that reminds me of the North West.

Tjilpi,

Yes, that is who I mean. I've never seen Bran Nu Dae but would love to. Corrugation Road was playing on the Broome radio on the day we drove out of Broome this year. It seemed perfect as that was where we were heading!!

We missed out on seeing the Pigram's this year because they were in Darwin during the time we were in Broome. Just means we'll have to go back again, doesn't it!!

Best wishes

Thanks for all the replies....... will look into MP3 or Ipod. There are some great bands mentioned I had even forgot about some of them.

Have to admit most of my music playing is on the black top to busy looking around and stopping and taking photo's to bother to much about offroad music. Mind you I usually travell with someone, but this is a solo run and i was looking at covering any boring areas driving ........ one does not want to fall asleep and make a mess in the desert :).

Do agree CD's are not a great option for corrogations should have remembered that from The Cape trip.

G'day Brian
I generally go for the older music from singers who can actually sing, not just make noises in the background while noisy "music" disguises their crappy voices.
Like Jim Reeves, Johnny Cash, Nat King Cole, Connie Francis, Patsy Cline, Bobby Vinton, Elvis, Marty Robbins etc.... Very relaxing to listen to.
Some of the older blokes around with a collection of oldies on vinyl records may be interested in a little unit I found on a discount website.
Site Link
Its a record turntable with a CD player, USB slot and a SD memory card slot. You can encode vinyl records or CD s direct to mp3 on the USB or to memory card, with no need for a computer. I have just placed an order and I"ll let you know how it goes when I get it and try it out.

Not yet mentioned of the old stuff is Supertramp, James Taylor, Barry McGuire, Randy Stonehill and Larry Norman, Gerry Raferty, Boz Scaggs, Phil Keagy and did someone mention Bob Seger.

Some new stuff that has not been mentioned and maybe not heard of Paul Coleman, The Lees, Mark Petersen, Colin Buchanan, Revive. All this new stuff is home grown too. Then there is Robert Randolph and Eric Bibb.

I have a daughter who plays violin so we get Bond too. Her teacher plays with the SSO so we even get some classical stuff.

I'm an Eagles and Simply Red fan myself.

Although I went to the effort of loading several tunes on the iPod and have an FM transmitter to play it through the car sterio, I now find I seldom bother.

When driving from point A to B on the bitumen, yes, like to play some music, but when driving off road, something happens. I am enjoying the drive so much, I forget about the iPod.

Likewise never play music when camping, but when travelling I really need sounds. I got myself a Blaupunkt system with amp, subwoofer under the passenger seat and two robust enclosed speakers in the back of the troopy. The headunit has a ipod hookup that I fed into the glove box - charges and plays directly, no fiddling with frequencies or cables. Only prob is the headunit doesn't control the ipod as it is supposed to. But if you make up a big playlist then plug it in it plays a way fine (or if it is on random). As for the music - Cowboy Junkies, Wilco, seem to fit. But then so does the Smashing Pumpkins and Belle and Sebastian... Haven't yet got the ipod to skip even on some pretty shocking African roads.

I've loaded up the PDA with about 700 MP3's with a fairly wide range of songs, mostly from the 60,70 & 80's. Pop, Rock, C&W, Classical etc.

when travelling with others I always found it interesting to swap music collections for part of the drive to break up the fact that you are always listening to your own collection. It also gives you a great insight into your fellow convoy members likes & dislikes and can tell you quite a lot about them.
Just for a bit of fun
