Info for those who use the following.
I shot off a question to Next Destination who are the supplier of the Magellan range of GPS.
My question was is DiscoverAus software and my Magellan meridian GPS compatible with the new vista operating system.
There reply was:
DiscoverAus CD is compatible with Vista as
well as the Magellan for
map uploads. The only thing that is not compatible is that real time
tracking of the GPS when connected to the laptop does not work.
Regards,
Matt

Perhaps I'm not understanding this properly... but isn't real time tracking one of the main things you would want to do with this setup?

Exactly it makes the combination next to useless on a new laptop system.
I have found that the developers of DiscoverAus do not support their customers at all.
Not only is it not fully compatible with the new operating system, if you want to upgrade from the normal version to the new topographical version, then you need to purchase a complete new version. No upgrade available.

Matt,
I wouldn't criticise Magellan, but rather blame the Microsoft Juggernaut who decided to release their new Operating System without backward compatibility with applications that ran successfully on XP.
Another reason to "downgrade" to XP instead of putting up with the idiosyncrasies of Vista.

Exactly!
Again microsoft issue an operating system that everyone who uses it has to adapt to.
The DiscoverAus software has been around longer than Vista..... it should be up to Microsoft to make it work on their system.

They talk about real time!! I think Magellan falls into the "once upon a time" category. Too expensive and no where near as friendly as Ozi Explorer. My Meridan Colour just sits in the cupboard and seldom comes out with me. They are way too forgetful of old customers. Cheers
