I was stopped this arvo by the Blue Light Taxi(Local Police) with a lots of lights flashing and 'Whoop'. Didn't know where he came from? He pulled out of a side street behind me when I left the curb, so I didn't see him. So he said.
Turns out my trailer indicator lights weren't working.
Now I have been thinking about fixing these for a while as the lenses are faded and cracked etc.....LOL
Anyway the local bloke just drew my attention to the fact that I should be aware of the fault and let me go with a smile. Maybe he felt sorry for me in me beanie and looking cold!!! He reckons its the very cold weather that does this to lights. Will remember that one!
Went to the
shop bought new lights and am now in the throes of repairing the old ones. What a pain. Loose wires and rusted contacts.
Should be all legal by tomorrow again.
Cheers

In management speak they would say you had become "incentivised" :-)
Hope it works right when you plug it in.

It was brass monkey weather, but then the "Mayor of Terowie" (I think he is that forever, right?) was there, and he looked rather a few years older than you ;-), oh, and your good mayor herself.

Willem,
Were you stopped in
Peterborough? Spent 6 years there in the 80's (drove a Blue Light Taxi) - coldest place in SA.

Is
Peterborough the place where the train runs down the main drag?
Saw some pics once where they resurected some old steam locos to haul ore for a few weeks.

Gday Willem. I would say you are dead lucky. Our local would throw the book at you unless you were a old bugger, which is probably how you got away wih it. Happy late birthday. CAUTION WHEN WIRING THE 7 PIN PLUG DONT GO IN SEQUENCE 1 TO 7. IT DOESNT WORK THAT WAY carefully follow the numbers in the plug as they are all over the place. I got caught recently after deciding to rewire the plug on my caravan in a caravan park at Hawks nest as the wiring going into it looked pretty horible. When I went to drive off a week later the electric brakes were locked on. I wired the plug 1 to 7. Silly boy

When you drive in a northerly direction from
Warraweena Willem make sure you stop when u get to the water mate. And if you get LED lights for the trailer they'll work in the cold weather too!

No.
Peterborough is the place with the Roundhouse where the three different guages of Railway met in distant past. We are still on the main line
Sydney to
Perth and have around 10 freight trains a day through here (the loooong ones) Indian Pacific also comes past.
Steve.
Thanks. Yes being a decrepit old bugger so I got away with it...lol
Bonz. LED? Nothing that flash here mate. Yep I will look out for the Arafura Sea....lol

Peterborough has the unique feature and the only place in the world where 3 railway gauges run across each other in some spectacular pointwork. 5'3", 4"81/2" and 3"6" all run thru here and at one place converge into a short length of interlaced track (just to show it can be done).... Duck out and get a
pic Willem for the Friday phunnies...In it's heyday the signalling must have been akin to air traffic control.... Now I think only standard gauge is used maybe the 3"6" is still connected to
Quorn so the Coffeepot can venture to
Peterborough for a service.

Ah Mr Fawlty
The standard guage pervails from
Sydney,
Broken Hill,
Peterborough,
Crystal Brook then west to Pt
Augusta and
Perth or
Darwin or east to
Adelaide.
There is an old disused 3'6" line running north from
Peterborough to
Orroroo and Eurelia and kiddy ride trains used to operate once a month but the insurance debacle of a few years ago put a stop to that. Pitchi Richi Railway still runs from
Port Augusta to
Quorn on weekends and is very popular.
Steamtown at
Peterborough houses the Roundhouse and a tourist based operation is now being developed after the local District Council took control of it.

I am still convinced I had a book showing these locos (Baldwins I think they were)
I'll have to dig out the book. It was called "Famous last lines"

Do I read you correctly that Steamtown don't run up to Black
Rock / Eurelia any more due to the insurance debacle?
Must be hard for the enthusiasts to mintain their enthusiasm if this is the case.
I would reiterate to any one interested in geometry and the art of the blacksmith, just how fascinating triple gauge turnouts are.
You have to take your hats off to the slide rule &
log table engineers of years ago in their ability to do the calculations to make this work.
I understand that the National Rail Museum at Port Dock,
Port Adelaide has some triple gauge track & turnouts (points) that they salvaged from
Peterborough /
Terowie area.

Yes
John. That is correct
AFAIK the volunteers(rail enthusiasts) are still working on and looking after the rolling stock and equipment. The District Council of
Peterborough has taken over the ownership and management of the complex and they have attracted a $250,000 government grant. This pays for a Manager and develpment of the Steamtown Historic Precinct.
Daily Tours of the complex are run by volunteers as
well. The Council has applied for other government grants and the idea is to have Steamtown Museum self funded within a set time frame.
I think that there is some thought of selling the line from
Peterborough to Eurelia to fund Steamtown. The Council is also selling excess stock and buying rolling stock pertinent to the Pterborough area, from another place

Many is the time I have caught a lift back to the ship in one. The

Broome guys pulled me for same issue as Willem a few weeks ago, but let me off as there was so much mud on the car and trailer from the GRR that it was apparent that my excuse - "it (the plug parting company with the wiring) happened out bush mate, and I am on my way to the Autolecky to fix it", sounded plausible enough. They even let me off for a failed low beam light too.
Country WA coppers have a sense of humour that seems to be lacking in Vic and SA - although perhaps not in the mid-North.
Cheers
Andrew.

In the ACT we have the random thought and vehicle inspectors who roam aimlessly looking for suspect vehicles and spring rego tests....Sometimes they set up roadblocks for the same purpose but only at busy locations and always it seems in peak hour. I got pinged for having a blown globe, incorrect amount of amberness in the left blinker & rear fog light blown in an Excel some time ago...I'm old and decrepit & did not get let off, I think getting let off is discriminatory.

Hi All
My father was an engineer (construction) in the South Aust Railways in the 50s at
Peterborough I can remember living on Railway Tce watching train of all types come and go all day. To get to
Adelaide by train you had to change trains at
Terowie I think.
Peterborough was a big place then.

The town took a dive after the railways left and the polpulation dwindled to about 1400.
Since around 2002 the has been a steady increase in the population again with many 'cheap' house being sold and retirees moving in. We arrived in late '99 and virtual 'blowins'...lol. Population is now around 2000 and there is optimism that mining will go ahead closeby and that
Peterborough will grow again.

Someone in the last couple of months posted a link to a 'new' type of trailer plug which is (apparently) easy to fit and has little led indicators to help you know its wired and working correctly. I saw one a couple of days later in Coventrys but I expect they are available everywhere - not expensive.
I expect to be buying one very soon as I am checking my trailer lights this weekend prior to a July
Pilbara trip.
At this point I decided I was being slack with this post so Google and I went looking for the plug - here it is....
