Hi everyone,I'm heading off to Katherine next week from Melb, for a 3 week adventure of the Top End.. I would like to know if the road to Twin Falls and Jim Jim falls are open yet ?.. If not then I thought I would drive to the Cobourg Peninsula for a look around...I would love to hear your thoughts and recommendations on places to check out along the way. I'm travelling alone and would appreciate any advice on what to be wary of,I've travelled alone a lot down south, however it's my 1st trip to N.T. Look forward to your feedback, Thanks in advance everyone..!!!

There is no use looking at this site, as the park staff that run the park and update this site told me 7 weeks ago it would be open 3 weeks ago.

Parks Australia North are running their own agenda, Jim Jim and Twin falls and Maguk should have been open 4 weeks ago.

I have given up talking to Park staff, I now only talk to politicians.

In fact after an Email, I received a phone call from Nigel Scullion, Senator for the N.T., in regards to the closure of these areas. He told me that there was money available to parks last year, to fix the problems that they are using as an excuse to keep the area closed right at this moment.

We were told today that Jim Jim falls may be open in 7/10 days and no info on Twin Falls as yet .

I personally set up a volunteer group of tour guides this year to help with the openings of these areas, At first this was embraced by Parks, Then I was told that it would not go ahead, when asked why I was not given an answer.

At the moment I have 4 trucks sitting in the drive way, I am waiting to employ 4 guides, the funny thing is my biggest expenditure last year, was the Twin Falls boat shuttle tickets.

As for your plans to go to Cobourg, you need to get a permit and this could take a while as there are # restrictions on Gurig N.P.

Phone NLC on 89792410 or www.nlc.org.au

As soon as the Falls open I will post a thread.

Hoping to still in Business Steve.

Hi Guys
You can find the same info on Exploroz. Our National Outback Road Conditions Report www.exploroz.com/Roads/NT.asp is updated continuously by us and local authorities. It is the only "one stop" report of its kind available in Australia.

cheers

Missed the falls in May (closed) though the roads looked as though they would be fine.
Do you ever wish we could sack some parks management - change the greenie culture and get parks open for people to enjoy? Sure manage the place so its not destroyed but where there is a problem --FIX IT- and quickly . dont just lock it away for months on end especially in the good season.

Do you wish you could sack park staff?

EVERY DAY.

Parks don't understand, if there is no tourism they would not have a job.

Don't get me started Steve.

not to start a war, but i too live in the NT and am glad that they close the roads; not leaving it to the judgement of others to determine it is OK use them. As someone that has to contend to damaged roads when I want to get away, most people out side of the tropics don't understand the damage or cost from the wet season on our roads, as well as the population pressures.

Another good link for roads in the NT is the dip roads web page

Park staff drove into Jim Jim falls 8 weeks ago, the camp ground manager has been there for 6 weeks, the grader finished 3 weeks ago, this was told to me by the Jim Jim operations manager 2 weeks ago.

As I said don't get me started.

Steve.

Jim Jim & Twin Falls closed when I was there on 2nd. June 07 . Gunloom & Edith falls were open though .
I tried the Coberg route - apply through Parks at Palmerston takes a few days costs $236.50 for up to 5 people for 7 nights at Black Point , no less for 2 . They only allow 15 at any one time with travel banned if there is a bereavement in the indigenous . There is no stopping , camping or visiting local art centres on the 5hr.trip from Oenpelli .
After chatting with a recent worker from there it did not seem worth the effort , quite windy right on the ocean etc.
Found great c/p's at Yellow waters , Aurora , Edith falls & Corroboree Ck ( $18 first night $9.00 second night with swimming pool ) Had a great dinghy dash from Mary River Houseboats up the Mary River .
Sandy Creek Falls and the Lost City are worth a look in Lichfield as well as all the other falls .
You will certainly enjoy thge weather!!!
Cheers John
