Hi to all
We plan to go to
carnarvon gorge in ten day trip and will spend 3or 4 days there.what i would like to know of any other great spots to see on the way up or back .We will have a 17ft dirt road van in tow and two kids.so we would like caravan parks to stay at if possible.Would also like not to back track over too many roads as we don't often get the chance to have this long off.Just a couple of good spots with a few days at each as we don't want to be traveling all the time.
Regards Mark

You could drop into the Jondaryan (spelling) Woolshed would be good for the kids to experience, it is between
Oakey and
Dalby.
Cheers Kev

Kev,
You might consider Cania
Gorge near
Monto. It has good camping facilities.
Head north from
Carnarvon to
Rolleston then east to Moura and Biloela then south almost to
Monto.
Regards,
Jon W

Hi,
I have a suggestion but I'll have to declare a vested interest first - we are presently relief managing this park while the owners have a
well-deserved break.
"This park" being Yarraman Caravan Park. Yarraman is a small town at the northern end of the
New England Highway, where it meets the D'Aguilar Highway which runs from Caboolture to Kingaroy. The park's located on the top of a
hill just north of the town, with pleasant
views north and south. It has ensuite sites as
well as regular powered & unpowered sites. It's even reasonably green at the moment, thanks to last week's 60-odd mm of rain.
Yarraman is a good base to explore the
Bunya Mountains (~60km away) and the South Burnett region without the van in tow. {The Bunya Mtns roads are not recommended for caravans but we've seen quite a few small, single axle vans up there. A 17 footer might be pushing it a bit on the tight steep corners though.) Nearby at Maidenwell is an Astronomical Observatory which is excellent if you've not before had the opportunity to look at the stars and planets through 'proper' telescopes.
We like this area so much we bought a block of land here 18 months ago...
Ian.

You could call into
Possum Park (near
Miles). Old war relics - ammo storage bunkers. They've got a website you might light to look at. Should be interesting for you & the kids.

Hi Markcas 3rd time lucky to get my reply to u.
Having lived at
Injune in my teens & spent considerable time at Carnarvons
just dont cut yourselves short of time u will need at least 4 full days there.
A round trip as others have suggested Esk, Yarraman, Gayndah,
Monto onto Cania
Gorge a nice place then up to Biloela across to Moura, Rolestone & head down to the
Carnarvon national park. There is plenty to see & do at Carnarvons a walk up to Battleship Spur 12klm, also many off shoots,
Amphitheatre, Violet
gorge, Hell Hole, a walk up
the Bluff, Tomahawk caves, Breakfast walk & if your still keen a walk to Devilmans signpost. Beware that it is rather chilly in winter at night the days are normally pleasant. U will have to back track part the way back to Rolestone till u reach the turnoff that takes u down to
Injune. Roms has Bassett's winery, The Big Rig history of the
Roma oil days, moving on
Miles has a great museum will need several hours to browse. If your keen
Possum Park is 20klm nth of
Miles on the
Taroom road is worth as squiz & has a good C/Van park also but u will have to back track to
Miles. The Jondaryan wool shed is good value but u may need to
check out their opening times. The
Oakey Army Aviation Base Museum I believe is interesting also. I suggest u search the net for more info on all these
places have been to all except the
Oakey AAB Museum.
