Take your time Kev. We were recently in NT and the Gulf. We regularly had reception on our CDMA while Next G users did not.

I think next G stands for 'Gee I wonder why this thing won't work next'.

We'll convert when we have to, but in the meantime, I believe that in remote areas CDMA has much better coverage despite the Telstra promotion of Next G.

Thanks Norm,

I am holding off for as long as possible as I want a Nokia. Hopefully they will release one in the Next G range. I seem to snap the flip phones and cant stand all the gizmos that they come out with.

The Nokia 6120 will be out on NextG in a few weeks I am led to believe.

It has no less gadgets on it than any of the other NextG phones....

Ohh for the days when it just did voice calls and was simplet to operate!

I may have to compromise and get one with some gadgets as long as it is not a flip phone.

The 6120 has the fast download system and will be a $30 a month phone with telstras Next G and due out in 4 weeks. I think the old charger socket is different with all the new Nokias, so the universal Nokia charger is no more,,,, I think!! Michael

There are pics and details on the 6120 here Site Link

"The Nokia 6120 Classic is a HSDPA-enabled handset with 2mpx digital camera, Series 60 operating system, 16.7 million colour TFT LCD, 35MB of shared memory, and more in a sophisticated, ‘classic’ looking design.

The highlight feature of the 6120 is the support for high speed HSDPA networks. The handsets’ radio receiver is compatible with GSM 850, 900, 1800, and 1900MHz 2G networks (with GPRS and EDGE data), and the WCDMA 850 and 1900MHz networks, with the HSDPA protocol. It’s not known what the maximum speed of the 6120 will be when using HSDPA data, but the press release did state that the handset offers download speeds “up to 10 times faster than over usual WCDMA networks.”

A forward-facing (CIF+) digital camera is built into the 6120 for video calling over 3G networks. On the back of the handset is a 2mpx digital camera (1600 x 1200 pixel maximum resolution) with 4x digital zoom, flash, panorama mode, and video recording. Video can be recorded in MPEG4 or 3GPP format, and playback of these formats plus RealVideo is supported by the integrated video player.

For storage, the 6120 offers 35MB of shared memory. There’s a microSD memory card slot, which supports cards up to 2GB in size. Looks like there won’t be a card in the sales package though, which means one will need to be purchased separately. To transfer files to and from the 6120 there is Bluetooth version 2.0 and USB with the Mass Storage Device profile. The handset come makes synchronization easy.

The 6120’s display is a large 2” TFT LCD panel, with support for up to 16.7 million colours in its 320 x 240 pixel resolution. The handset runs the Nokia Series 60 user interface and has a built in music player with MP3, M4A, eAAC+, and WMA format support. 64-chord polyphonic MIDI, True Tone, and MP3/AAC ringing tones are supported.

SMS, MMS, instant messaging, and e-mail messaging (with attachments) is fully supported by the 6120. The high speed of the WCDMA and HSDPA protocols over 3G networks will make downloading large e-mails a breeze. The handset also has a web browser with streaming video support.

The 6120 Classic is expected to hit our shores towards the end of the 2nd quarter. It will come in two colour variations: black or white. "

Doug, the pollies are sounding off before the election. I talked to Next G support guys aver problems I had earlier and heard about the streaming speeds they have got at distance with the tuned up systems for internet. No doubt the phone will only improve.

The biggest problem at large is that some people have NFI how some phones vary from others. The technology of phones ain't all equal.

Hi Kev

I can't say I'm impressed with coverage. My old CDMA phone acquired a signal 30km west of Alice Springs, now with the NextG phone I have to wait until I have the town in sight. Same deal at Hermannsburg - used to be around 20km, now don't get a signal until 3 km when I have line-of-sight to the tower.

Cheers

CDMA was LG then Nokia x2 , both good.
NextG is Samsung x2 and iMate, all poor range. Once I get a signal, the quality of nextG is superb, but I'd rather have range than clarity sometimes!!

Maybe it's the phones, but I suspect it's at least partly the network.

Cheers

Jiana - John, something else wrong there. There will be towers and phones that cause problems when they set up a network nation wide, but best not say it's general as it isn't. Even with digital phones I have had some crap ones and some really good ones, but still a 35km range max.

Think the point on iMate is that they are made for email, not range but should go better than that. Others have said that here before, nothing new in the comment. Samsung should do better. Have LG here.

Your unreal some of you blokes, seems you expect Australia wide coverage the very day a new system starts, so what if your CDMA works there and Next G don't , The situation will change very dramaticly soon, maybe if you went back there now you would have coverage on Next G,

Eh, Doug, they all know that the axe was the best way to keep warm. Grandfather's one especially........ Lets get back there. LOL

I have had some people say they had trouble in their longe room with digital phones. They could get on their feet and walk out or get the technology that was designed for it. Even in Europe there are plenty of places that you can't get signal.

Great Doug. Are you using an external antenna with high gain to get the signal? How far is the Plutonic mine from where you were?

I am using the Modem type, both the laptop and Modem are running off the Inverter,The Modem has the two little antennas on it , thats why I wanted that one over Mobile , it is also cheaper to buy and run,

That is what I have too, but have a high gain phone antenna connected too which has given me a better signal strength through the trees locally. Cyprus trees tend to make it more difficult. I have the antenna hung over the rafters under the veranda.

I plan to have it at Warraweena. Will get signal from up the slopes somewhere even if not at plane level. Will see what happens, have the broomstick on the front of the worst comes to the worst.

I am hanging on till the grim death , LOL

My house is in a little gully and misses all GSM networks .

I got CDMA so work could contact me easily ( SMS for overtime ).

Very ironic that you can get internet in the middle of nowhere and I miss phone reception within 50km of Sydney CBD.

Glenn.

Certainly not the reception they are getting around NE Victoria. After a month of complaining to Telstra of dropped calls & poor coverage they actually offered my mate a CDMA phone back again until they could get it improved :-)) So much for the adds "Coverage everywhere you need it". Obviously as far as Telstra are concerned he didn't really NEED to talk on the phone after all.
Cheers Craig.............

Re: Next G internet

I have the next G turbo modem on our laptop ( home & vehicle) and found that with a 7dBi gain antenna we have gone from one or less bar's to five bars at home.

We still have network drop-out's at different times.

Good to hear that yours is working so well, we are heading to the Kimberly's via the Simpson in September and then down to Perth.

Are you refering to phone or internet when you say connections, with phone I had no connection at places like Paynes Find or Kumarina with CDMA and I don't expect it with Next G.... yet, with CDMA I got service within a reasonable distance from a town with an external antenna, with Next G I get service in the same said area's without an external antenna minus maybe 6 to 10 klm , to stuff around with an external antenna just to gain 6 to 10 klm is in my opinion not worth the expense, my phone has message bank, if I am out of service they leave a message,
