Hi All,

The family is planning to have a 2 week holiday in Sept-Oct this year and are looking for suggestions of where to go. Besides my wife and myself we have two boys (10 & 15) and are keen to make sure that wherever we go there will be something of interest to all of us (teenage kids are hard to please). We live in ACT and are thinking of no more then 3-4 days to get somewhere that we can have as a base camp and do days trips from there. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Baden.

If you like camping try a Camping spot just North of town called Ashford west of Tenterfield - I think it is a National Park so check with them of name,it is still free to camp. From there you have access to fishing, camping, bushwalking on the Severn River, there is a cave to explore with bats inside, plenty of short drives and if you want you can go for day trips to Sudown national Park west end,Glenlyn dam ,Texas, I havent been there but Kings Plain Nat Park is nearby. There are lots to do as the scouts go there a lot.Camped there once and cant wait to go back. Its about 6 hr drive from Brissy

With two weeks you could have a really good look around far western NSW and September is a good time to be there.

You could plan an itinery that would keep you in and around Broken Hill for the entire time or you could travel around places like Bourke, White Cliffs, Cameron's Corner, then head west and south to have a look at the Flinders Ranges back through the Hill and work your way home via Menindee, Mungo and back along the Murrimbidgee to the ACT.

Ask again if you want more detail on that area and I'll tell you more and put you in contact with people who can really help.

Baden,

I said I could give you some more info on Broken Hill and surrounds, so here goes.

There are a number of possibilities for a trip to the Hill. Just getting there offers the chance of a number of interesting possibilities, but I will try to keep it realistic and interesting.

From Canberra you could go via Dubbo couple of nights there and have a look at the Zoo. Then head west towards the Hill you should be able to make White Cliffs inn the day. I would recommend a night at the Underground Hotel. The boys will love exploring the tunnels that make up the hotel and it is worth going up the stairs to the roof to check out the stars.

The next day you could head out through Muttawingi have a quick look there and then head to Broken Hill. There are lots of accommodation options from 4 star hotels to rental houses or the CV Parks. Both parks are OK without being spectacular but are friendly. I have stayed at Lakeview but I have met the managers at Broken Hill CP and they are good folk as well.

In Broken Hill there is heaps to see. The best option is to contact the Visitor Information Centre 08 8088 9700. I would recommend a visit to at least a couple of galleries Pro Hart's is a must see even if you don't like Pro's work, Jack Absalom's is good too but there are heaps of others that are worth a look. White's Mineral Art Museum in Doe St will give you a good insight into the mining history of the town. There is also the RFDS Base and the cafe on the mullock heap offers great views over the town. Especially good at sunset.

You should also have a day out to Silverton. Lots to see out there. Peter Brown and John Dynon have galleries up at Silverton Heights, the Woodroffe's gallery is good to as is the Coin Carvery. The Cafe make good lunches and coffee. The Museum is worth a visit and of course there is the Pub. You should also take a look at the Daydream Mine on your way out to Silverton. Say Hi to Kevin and Beth for me.

Menindee and Kinchega is also a good day trip out of the Hill. Set off early because it is a big day. A nice trip is to go to the look out over Menindee Lake which is dry at the moment, turn right just after the interconnecting channel. When you come out of there head in to Copi Hollow for a look around. Then head out past the scout camp to Burke and Wills Camp and the Main Regulator. Follow the river back into Menindee, check out Maidens Pub where Burke and Wills stayed then out into Kinchega to see the shearing shed. Follow the river back to the main road and return to Broken Hill. Should get back to the Hill just before dark. There are lots of places where you could stop and cook up lunch over a camp fire along that route.

That will take you the best part of a week. Head south to Wentworth and Mildura then work your way home to Canberra over a couple of days and your ten day holiday is all done.

This is only one suggestion but will give you something to work on. There are lots of other possibilities. I could have a dozen holidays in that area and still not see it all. Be careful that part of the world is addictive, you will almost certainly feel the need to go back some time.
