Hi,
Does anyone know anything about wind-up radios or wind up torches. I have been looking at a wind up radio with 4 wave lengths. It can be charged by solar, AC/DC or wind up. Have been considering buy a wind up torch for emergencies, but wondered whether both products were worthwhile. Can anyone recommend a brand if they have used them.?

Son gave us a wind-up L.E.D torch Zedd, and it went
well. Until the last time we went
camping, when it would not turn off when it was switched off. I was going to throw it out but something held me back, and getting trailer set up again, wound the torch up and it's going fine again.
Common sense tells me that, if these dynamo type things get over-wound, they will re-act like this one did. If you buy one of these 'gadgets,' you will have to keep it out of the hands of those (mostly
young males) who are addicted to touching/switching and/or winding things to see what happens. Some of these personality types will not be told that the object is/needs to be wound only to a certain point and no further.
Good luck with whatever you decide,
OzeSheila.

Do you know the brand and the LED of the torch? Was the light good enough to see by (say for looking at a car engine clearly if you broke down?)

There's also an LED torch that you charge by shaking. By the way, it doesn't matter how much you wind or shake them - longer you wind, the longer they'll stay illuminated. Definitely in the "novelty" class. You can't go past a good quality torch, a spare bulb and an extra set of batteries in my opinion.

G'Day Zedd,
I purchased a 3 LED wind up torch two years ago. No brand on the case, but was only $15 from the local disposals store.
Since then I have managed to lose 3 other LED battery torches, but always manage to find this one.
They are very large for only having three LED's but still looks and works like new.
As with most LED's the light is very directional but fine for getting close up under the bonnet when required.
The disposals store did a test when I purchased
mine, 5 minutes of winding then left the torch on 3 LED's till it ran out. Was still going four days later.
Hope this helps
Rolande

I have a multi-LED torch which is very compact and runs "forever" off one "AA" battery. This torch lives in my pocket after dark and next to me when in bed.
Has never failed me.
Now, about the wind up torches. One brand that is available is from Waeco, yes the mob that make and sell fridges. And no, there is not an Engel equivalent that runs on less winds:-)))
Have a look at the Waeco link usually on the right hand side of the menu and you should find reference to the torch therein.

Just bought a 4 LED torch off Mitre10 for $9.95 that also charges Mobile phones that use the Nokia style round plug.
You can 2 or 4 LEDs on or 2 red LEDs with a siren sound !
About the size of a packet of cigarettes.
1000% over the shaker torches.

I keep a very cheap one in the glove box and it has been invaluable. You can leave it there and know that it will work when you need it I got fed up with finding that the battery had gone flat/corroded with the torch that used to live there.
